Open data sources for fun and profit

Some days ago I joined this Data Geek Challenge with my not so serious contribution regarding David Hasselhoffs future. Wanting to join the challenge I thought about the right dataset and how I could contribute. Often our companies don't want to have their data out in the wild (even when it's anonymized). So for those about to join and needing some public available data to crunch I'm listing some sources here.

Please be heartily welcomed to comment your known sources in order to aggregate an usable and informative list. Thanks!

Have fun and please comment your additions and possible results and visualizations.

Hi,

Here are a couple of sites I find myself going back to :

  1. 'Freedom of information' data and published UK Government statistics : http://data.gov.uk/
  2. Open data from a liberal press group in UK (Guardian newspaper) : http://www.theguardian.com/technology/page/2009/jun/17/1   or  http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2013/jan/14/all-our-datasets-index

Regards,

H
