SUM 1.0 SP06 - customer action required

SAP's unified software logistics tool Software Update Manager (SUM) will replace other logistic tools. The upcoming version 1.0 SP06 (and higher versions) requires that customers complete some requirements which need to be planned before getting started. The requirements will become mandatory as soon as SUM 1.0 SP05 runs out of support in the second half of 2013. SAP Kernel Enhancements on IBM i

The SAP Kernel for SAP on IBM i has been enhanced in structure and handling with SAP Kernel releases 7.10 and 7.20. This presentation gives a short overview of the most important improvements. It is locatedĀ  in the Application Lifecycle Management space of SCN.

SAP JVM 4 as Replacement for Partner JDKs 1.4.2

SAP developed its own Java Virtual Machine (JVM) 1.4.2, named SAP JVM 4, to ensure the guaranteed support for SAP Web Application Server 6.40 and SAP NetWeaver 7.0 systems. The replacement is required because of end of support for the partner JDK 1.4.2 solutions.

Updated: Improve Upgrade Performance

IBM has published a whitepaper dealing with upgrade performance of SAP systems on IBM i. The joint IBM/SAP team recently released several improvements in upgrade performance that are now presented in a comprehensive document. (Jan. 28, 2009)

Defective DB Group PTF Level 22

IBM found that database group PTF SF99701 Level 22 is defective and can cause damage to your system. They delivered an improved Level 23 containing PTF SI49730, which prevents the problems of the defective level. Make sure you read Note 1837176 - IBM i: Faulty PTFs in database group PTF SF99701 Level 22 if you installed Level 22. (Mar. 21, 2013)

Pilot Program for 7.20 Downward Compatible Kernel

SAP has started a pilot program for the 7.20 DCK. SAP note 1616251 - "Downward Compatible Kernel 720 Pilot Project" provides more details about the pilot program and how to apply for participation. (Sep. 02, 2011)

Support for SAP R/3 4.6C on IBM i 7.1

Maintenance of SAP R/3 4.6C has in general been extended by SAP until 2013 after certification of OS release IBM i 7.1. In order to cover up to date releases within this timeframe it was decided to add support for this combination as of June 6th, 2011. Precondition for utilizing SAP R/3 4.6C on IBM i 7.1 is a patch level of 2582 for the 4.6D kernel. SAP on IBM i Solid State Disk (SSD) Usage Recommendations

SAP system response times are sometimes constrained by the available I/O performance. SSD drives offer superior I/O performance compared to spinning disks. The IBM i operating system provides build in storage management functions to fully exploit the benefits of SSD. This white paper provides step by step instructions of how to move relevant SAP data to SSD to improve runtime performance of SAP systems. (Dec. 03, 2010)

SAP Database multi-connect for IBM i DB2 for AIX is generally available

The new SAP database driver allows SAP application servers running on AIX to natively connect to any IBM i DB2/400 database over a secondary connection.

This exemplifies one major benefit of SAP having moved to DBSL Direct Drive (XDN) technology - total independence from a separate database client. SAP has the potential to offer database connectivity to IBM i from any platform that SAP supports; independent of IBM development involvement. (Dec. 03, 2010)

If you would like to learn more about how a typical SAP on IBM i landscape looks like, this SAP white paper provides you with a high-level overview of SAP solution implementations on the IBM i platform. The document - written by members of the SAP on IBM i development team - first introduces basic SAP and IBM i components, including high availability options. SAP on IBM i Recommendations and Review

There is a lot of information about running SAP on IBM i available. There are IBM redbooks, SAP Notes and a lot of documentation provided by IBM and SAP. Ron Schmerbauch from the IBM team working on SAP on IBM i has collected parts of this documentation that every SAP on IBM i administrator should be aware of. IBM i 7.1 certified for SAP Solutions

Product Availability Matrix (requires SMP login)

The recently announced IBM i version 7.1 has been certified for SAP solutions on May 17th, 2010. The certification is limited to SAP product releases based on technology release 6.x or newer being in mainstream maintenance or extended maintenance at the beginning of 2011. IBM announces POWER 7 processor

IBM has announced the new POWER 7 processor recently. New Power Systems which are based on the new technology have also been presented. A new minor version of the IBM operating system (version 6.1.1) was released that allows users to leverage the increased performance of the POWER 7 processors. Whitepaper: Using IBM JVM 1.4.2 for SAP Java Environments

A new whitepaper has been published by IBM dealing with the usage of IBM's JVM 1.4.2 for SAP NetWeaver Application Server Environments. Two of the authors work in the joint SAP/IBM team that is enabling SAP's software to run on the IBM i operating system. In this whitepaper they present, based on their experience from development and customer support, typical issues and their solutions, tuning options and tool usage. (Sep 23, 2009)

Improving I/O Performance Using Solid-State Drive Technology

Solid-State Drive (SSD) technology is an important new technology that is being introduced into IBM System Storage solutions to significantly improve performance and reduce energy consumption. Measurements have shown that combining IBM System Storage with SSD, high-speed fiber connectivity, and DB2 can provide more options for improved system responsiveness and throughput for SAP applications. One of the newest redpapers published by IBM deals with running NetWeaver Java on IBM i. Beginning with a description of the architecture and the Java Virtual Machine the book contains information about implemenation, configuration and tuning, debugging and problem analysis.

SAP Solutions certified for IBM i 6.1

SAP Solutions with DB2 for IBM i are certified for IBM i 6.1 starting from Monday, May 5th 2008. This certification is limited to SAP Product Releases that have been in Mainstream Maintenance or Extended Mainteance by SAP at the beginning of 2008 (see for details). Simplifying SAP on i5/OS with Single Sign-on

IBM made the new edition of their redbook available that deals with SAP systems on an IBM i server. Written by hands-on experts from IBM and in cooperation with the responsible SAP platform team the book contains more than 750 pages. It fully covers installation, upgrading and administrating SAP software on a IBM i.

The SAP on IBM i community now has its own forum in SDN. We would like to encourage all users of the old mailing list SAPoniSeries to move to the new SAP on IBM i. This short introduction describes how to sign up for the SDN forums and how to participate in the SAP on IBM i community.
