Enhancing your Monitoring Possibilities

This section contains documents which explain how you can extend the functions and the metrics of the monitoring infrastructure. The section focuses on expanding the standard functions by configuring the monitoring of new metrics (like event log messages or qRFC/tRFC calls) and on expanding the functions of the monitoring infrastructure with your own developments.

In principle, you can extend the possibilities of the monitoring infrastructure with your own developments at two points:

  • Reporting monitoring data to the monitoring infrastructure, such as instrumenting additional components
  • Reading monitoring infrastructure monitoring data, for example, to display the data in your own display tool

For general information about monitoring, see Monitoring your SAP NetWeaver Components.

How to Activate Monitoring of Additional Metrics

Monitoring Response Times of Transactions or Clients                    (SAP Help Portal)

You can use the Alert Monitor to monitor the response times in a particular client, in a transaction, or in a transaction in a client, e.g. to monitor a service level agreement.

Monitoring Jobs with the Alert Monitor                    (SAP Help Portal)

With job monitoring, you can monitor individual jobs in the Alert Monitor with regard to status and runtime. This is an important extension of the monitoring of the background runtime environment, in which the general status of the SAP background processing is monitored.

Job Monitoring with the CCMS Alert Monitor                    (SAP Tutor, 6 MB)

With job monitoring, you can monitor individual jobs in the Alert Monitor with regard to status and runtime. This is an important extension of the monitoring of the background runtime environment, in which the general status of the SAP background processing is monitored.

Event Log Monitoring using CCMS Agents                    (SDN Blog)

On Microsoft Windows platforms, you can monitor the Windows event log with CCMS agents. So, events in the event log of any host can trigger alerts in the CCMS Monitoring Infrastructure. This weblog describes the setup and some basic configuration of SAP CCMS agents to monitor Microsoft Windows event logs.

New Functions for Monitoring Files with CCMS Agents                    (SDN Blog)

Are you familiar with CCMS agents? The agents are used in the CCMS monitoring infrastructure to transfer monitoring data to a central monitoring system (CEN), and you have probably only got to know the agents through registering them with CEN. However, the CCMS agents also have powerful additional functions, and it is worth finding out about these. One of these additional functions is the possibility of monitoring any files. This file monitoring with CCMS agents was significantly revised and extended with Patch Collection 2007/6 of the CCMS agents. In this blog, I want to explain the possibilities of file monitoring in general, and introduce the new functions in particular.

Developing New Functions

SAP NetWeaver AS - External Interface for Alert Management (BC-XAL)                    (SDN Page)

The XAL interface described here is part of an interface package for external system management programs. On the SAP side, these interfaces consist of a collection of function modules.

SAP NetWeaver Application Server - Write Interface-CCMS Monitoring Architecture (Version 1.0) (BC-XMW)                    (SDN Page)

You can use the XMW interface to transfer data to the CCMS monitoring architecture using XML documents. This data is then displayed in the alert monitor of the monitoring architecture in the same way as any other data.

Distributed Statistic Records Shared Library: API Guide for the Writer

The Distributed Statistic Records Shared Library is designed to be used by non ABAP applications to write statistical and trace data. The library provides means to write data in a centralized, synchronized and standardized manner.

Writing a Data Supplier for the Alert Monitor

This document shows how to instrument any component for the CCMS monitoring infrastructure. It confines itself to passive data suppliers under ABAP.

GRMG Customizing Files

With the following templates (available in ZIP files), you can monitor the availability of several SAP Netweaver components centrally using GRMG.
