Impact of BEx Query changes on Web Intelligence documents via BICS

Introduction

This document aims at clarifying how some BEx Query changes do impact existing Web Intelligence documents that were created using the BICS direct access in BI 4.1 releases.

Frequently, BEx Queries evolve and are subjects to change during their life cycle well after BI clients reports have been created on top of those BEx Queries and published to end users. Prior to making those changes, it is necessary to understand the nature of the impacts on existing Web Intelligence documents, to measure the consequences and to anticipate potential corrective/preventive actions.

The behaviors of Web Intelligence described in this document have been checked and tested in Web Intelligence BI 4.1 SP04. The document will be updated as and when behaviors will change or when new ones introduced, however different behaviors might be observed in more recent versions.

Note: Any change in BEx Query requires restarting Web Intelligence session in order to be taken into account. Users need to Log Off then Log In to start a new session when using BI Launchpad, or restart the application when using Web Intelligence Rich Client

Impacted scenarios

The workflows and scenairos in Web Intelligence that are subject to change when underlying BEx Queries are modified are:

- Edit Query

- Run Query from the Query Panel

- Refresh document and Refresh on Open

- Refresh/display List Of Values of prompts based on BEx Variables

- Scheduling

There is no impact on document opening/loading scenarios, except for when document is saved with option Refresh on Open. In this case, the Refresh is impacted as stated above.

The table below describes impacts on Edit Query and Refresh document workflows. However, as stated above, other workflows might be impacted, like List Of values, Scheduling, OpenDocument links etc ..
