Zero Downtime Maintenance
With SPS 7 for SAP HANA, SAP introduces the concept of Zero Downtime Maintenance for the SAP HANA database.
SAP enables new operations processes to allow real-time business process continuity by supporting hot patching in productive environments. This new SAP HANA capabilities is enabled for SAP Applications running an ABAP Stack using the ABAP Application Server, like SAP Business Suite on HANA and SAP BW on HANA.
This keeps transaction on ABAP layer running and allows to change components (software versions) on the layers in the SAP HANA database on secondary (shadow) HANA instance, like
- Changing database parameters that otherwise cannot be changed online (hot)
- Performing a planned switch to a "standby" server
- Upgrading the SAP HANA database server software to a new HANA Support Package (SP) level, without changing the SAP HANA client version
- Creating triggers on highly-frequented SAP HANA database tables
Based on connectivity suspend feature of the SAP NetWeaver ABAP stack (SAP note 1913302), the DBSL Database-Shared Library of the database interface decouples the transaction management between the SAP ABAP Application Server and the SAP HANA database, thus allowing hot patching.
