How to install SAP NetWeaver Application Server Java

Tags:

This document describes the setup of SAP NetWeaver Java as a basis for SAP Mobile Documents. It is part of the step-by-step Implementation and Integration Guide for SAP Mobile Documents.

Overview

This document is not intended to replace the SAP standard documentation. It provides an easy-to-use step-by-step explanation on how to install a test environment.

  • Install SAP NetWeaver AS Java 7.4

  • Platform is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard / MaxDB

  • Perform initial configuration to prepare SAP Mobile Documents installation

These are the steps that are described in detail in this article:

  • Download Software packages
    • Installation files
    • SAPCAR
    • Software Provisioning Manager
  • Extract Software Provisioning Manager
  • Run Installation (using sapinst)
  • Installation Check

1. Download

1.1 Download Installation Files

Go to the SAP Service Market Place (SMP) http://service.sap.com/swdc

Select “SAP NetWeaver and complementary products”.

Proceed with the navigation to “SAP NetWeaver” - “SAP NetWeaver 7.4”

Select “Installation and Upgrade”.

Then select the proper platform, in our case “Microsoft Windows” and then “MaxDB (SAPDB)”

Scroll to the bottom of the page and download all files with the following media number:

(Note: This documentation was produced with 7.4 SR1 - for later versions, just choose the appropriate entries)

51046952 (RDBMS MaxDB 7.9)
Files 1 to 3: 1 EXE, 2 RAR files

51047454 (NW 7.4 SR1):
Files 1 to 7: 1 EXE, 6 RAR files

51048107 (SAP Kernel 7.41)
File 8: 1 ZIP file

Note: Ideally, you create sub-folders for each media number in your “InstMedia” download folder.

After download, extract all packages (to unzip the RAR files, start the EXE file).

1.2 Download SAPCAR

Go to the SAP Service Market Place (SMP) via http://service.sap.com/patches
Select “SAP Technology Components” and then “SAPCAR 7.20”.

Select the operating system.

Select the download at the bottom. Save the file to your “COMMON” download folder.

Rename the downloaded file to sapcar.exe

1.3 Download and Extract Software Provisioning Manager

You download the SWPM*.SAR file from SAP Service Marketplace at:

http://service.sap.com/sltoolset -> Software Logistics Toolset 1.0 -> Software Provisioning Manager 1.0 -> download tool (download latest version)

Optional: For more information check SAP Note 1680045.

Put the file sapcar.exe (see previous step) and the SWPM*.SAR file in one folder.

Open a command prompt and move into the folder you created.

Extract the SWPM*.SAR file with the following command:

sapcar –xvfz SWPM<version>.SAR

The SAR archive is now being extracted into a sub-folder.

2. Run the Installation

2.1 Run Prerequisites Check

Move into this sub-folder and execute the sapinst.exe file.

Select NetWeaver 7.4 Support Release 1 or the release you are using for the installation.

Navigate to your DB platform and select “Preparations”.

Select the “Prerequisites Check” and click on “Next”.

Select the options displayed in the next screenshot (AS Java):

Confirm the next screen:

Provide the path to the (previously downloaded and extracted) Kernel files:

In the following screen, press “Next” to start the check.

If you want to modify any of the options, mark the checkbox and click on “Revise”.

Click Next.

Review the result of the check.

Results with “OK” don’t need any attention.

Results with “Condition not met” should be reviewed. Check the severity and additional message to decide if any action is required.

Hint: In case you get the information, that Swap Size condition is not met, you can follow the instructions to increase virtual memory.

Click on “Next” to continue.

In case you have at least one condition that is not met, a popup reminds you of this.

You now have the option to either correct the issue or continue without any changes.

Click “Yes” to repeat the check.

Click “No” to accept the results and continue.

2.2 Installation

To start the installation, you have to run sapstart again.

Navigate to SAP NetWeaver 7.4 Support Release 1. Choose your database platform and navigate to “SAP Systems - Application Server Java - Standard System”.
Select “Standard System” and click on “Next”.

Note: For non-demo/test systems, please check your requirements and choose the appropriate installation type(s).

Click Next

In the first screen, select “Typical” as the parameter mode.

You need “Custom” if you perform a productive installation or if you have advanced requirements.

Click on “Next” to continue.

Provide the directory in which the Java Components are available (that you did download and extract in a previous step):

Click Next

Select the Usage Types as shown in the screenshot below:

Click Next

Choose as system ID for your system. This ID should be unique per host.

Click Next.

Provide the links to the folders that you have downloaded and extracted in previous steps:

Click Next.

Provide a Master Password to be used for all technical and administrative users (and make sure you remember this one later!):

Click Next.

In this screen, set the radio button to “Local Domain”.

This is sufficient for a demo installation.

Click “Next” to continue.

In case of MaxDB, select the name of the Database ID.

For other databases, you are asked to provide the parameters to access the pre-installed database.

Click “Next” to continue.

The prerequisite checks are run again.

Hope you managed to solve the critical issues, then you can continue by clicking on “No” (which means you don’t want to re-run the checks).

In the next step, you are asked to install a Solution Manager Diagnostics Agent. This is wise for a productive installation.

In our case, we deselect the option.

Click “Next” to continue.

Review your provided information.
In case you want to modify any of the options, use the checkboxes and click on “Revise” this will bring some of the options back again.

If your are satisfied with your data, click “Next” to continue.

As the installation takes a while, it is a good point to either go for lunch, do something else or just go home (without shutting down the system where the installation runs on of course).

In normal cases, the installation runs through without issues, and you should see the summary screen at the end.

Click OK if this is the case.

In case of issues, “Show Details” provides you some information what went wrong during the installation.

2.3 Installation Check

After the successful installation, there are several ways to check if your system is up and running. Here are a few (providing you already with some helpful tools you might use at a later time).

On a Windows platform, you find the SAP Microsoft Management Console (MMC) on the desktop.

With the MMC, you have an overview of the system and can perform basic tasks, like starting and stopping of the system.

On non-Windows systems, you might access the Web MMC via the URL http://localhost:50013.

It provides almost the same features as the SAP MMC.

Keep in mind that the Web MMC is accessible only from the local host by default due to security reasons. It is possible to change this.

You can also just access the start page of your system via http://localhost:50000.
