1 General

1.1 What is ABAP technical configuration?

The technical configuration of ABAP systems is an elementary part of setting up and operating SAP system landscapes. Instead of performing all those technical configuration steps manually, SAP offers the ABAP task manager for lifecycle lanagement automation that supports you in performing configuration tasks for ABAP systems in an automated way, making your configuration experience easier, faster and more reliable.

1.2 How are the configuration activities automated?

The automation is performed with the ABAP task manager for lifecycle management automation, our framework for the automation of ABAP lifecycle management tasks. It is part of every ABAP system based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 and higher (as of a certain SP level) and easy-to-use for everybody familiar with SAP ABAP systems. For several configuration use cases, we offer special task lists reflecting expert knowledge in a machine-readable format. You can parameterize and adapt the task lists to your requirements.

1.3 Where can I get further details?

  • For more information about using the ABAP task manager for lifecycle management automation, call transaction STC01 in your system and choose the Online Help pushbutton directly in the tool.
  • For an overview of automated use cases for ABAP systems, see the ABAP Technical Configuration page.

2.1 Which use cases are supported?

Below is a high-level list of currently supported use cases - SAP is constantly working on improving these, so take a look at the references above for further details.

  • ABAP initial setup
Benefit from automated tasks to perform the initial setup and configuration of a newly installed system to enable its usage.
  • Post-Copy Automation
Benefit from automated tasks to perform activities required after the system copy, making the copy of every SAP ABAP system easier, faster, and more reliable. Additionally, automated task lists enable an easy and reliable refresh of existing test system.
  • SAP Fiori Setup
For the automated setup of SAP Fiori, benefit from automation content for the configuration of ABAP 7.4 systems.
  • Security Checks
Use the available automation content to perform security system smoke tests for your existing ABAP systems.

2.2 What activities are automated for the ABAP initial setup?

Many standard tasks you have to perform after the installation of systems based on SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP 7.4 can be performed in an automated way, such as the installation of an SAP license, the creation of logon groups, and the configuration of the Transport Management System and security settings.

For more information, see the Configuration Guide - Technical Configuration Automation ABAP (SMP logon required).

2.3 What activities are automated for ABAP post-copy automation?

Part of the copy or refresh of an existing system are the extensive post-copy activities that have to be performed. As part of SAP Landscape Virtualization Management, we are offering sophisticated automation content that makes the copy of every SAP ABAP system easier, faster, and more reliable. For existing test systems, existing configuration settings can be reliably exported before the refresh and imported afterwards - this way, the configuration settings are persisted, while you update your existing system with the latest data from your source system.

In addition to basis configuration content, we are providing more and more application-specific tasks that are automated, such as for SAP Enterprise Resource Planning and SAP Business Warehouse.

Especially for ABAP Post-Copy Automation, there is a separate FAQ document available, providing further details for this use case.

2.4 What activities are automated for the setup of SAP Fiori?

For the automated setup of SAP Fiori, corresponding building blocks get configured, such as SAP Gateway, SAP Fiori Launchpad, and SAP NetWeaver basis. For more information, see the Configuration Guide - Technical Configuration Automation ABAP Fiori Frontend (SMP logon required).

2.5 What activities are automated for the security checks?

The automated security checks enable you to perform security smoke tests by checking the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) configuration and the basis system configuration.

With the ABAP task manager for lifecycle management automation, you can easily create and maintain variants of the pre-delivered automation task lists that can then be executed without dialog phase or with only some parameters predefined by you. Optionally, you can also extend pre-delivered content with your own tables and reports.

After the execution, you find detailed information in the log file for every performed activity, offering full transparency on the automation process.
