ABAP Technical Configuration



The technical configuration of ABAP systems is an elementary part of setting up and operating SAP system landscapes. For example, you have to perform initial technical configuration to bring a newly installed system into operation - such as the installation of SAP License, the creation of logon groups and operation modes, the configuration of transport management, and the configuration of security settiongs. But also during the lifecycle of an SAP system, technical parameters have to be set and adapted.

Instead of performing all those technical configuration steps manually and on different ABAP systems, SAP offers the ABAP task manager for lifecycle management automation that supports you in performing configuration tasks in an automated way. It is especially intended for the automation of ABAP tasks and is therefore part of every ABAP system (as of certain release/SP level) and easy-to-use for everybody familiar with SAP ABAP systems (similar to SE38). Value Proposition

The ABAP task manager guides you through the configuration process and offers a uniform user interface for all configuration tasks. In addition to the framework, the main benefit is provided by the configuration tasks delivered by SAP; think of control files for the frameworks that reflect SAP expert knowledge in a machine-readable format. See the next section for more information about available automation content from SAP.

So, instead of having an SAP expert sitting in front of your system that performs configuration settings manually, you let ABAP task manager guide you through the corresponding process. This way, you will end up with a system that reflects configuration settings for your use case as recommended by SAP. As a result, you can perform configuration tasks:

  • With less effort and cost due to the reduction of manual tasks - use a wizard for configuration instead of thoroughly reading configuration documentation and performing the corresponding steps manually in different UIs, transactions, and tools,
  • Faster and with less expertise required - profit from SAP expert knowledge in machine-readable format that control our framework,
  • With higher reliability and in a ‘standardized' manner - offer configuration services in a constant quality, no matter who performs the task and in what mood.

Overview of Available Automation Content

SAP is delivering a lot of automation content for ABAP systems in the form of task lists that you can adapt and execute in the ABAP task manager, for many different use cases and scenarios, as described in the following sub-sections.

ABAP Initial Setup

After you have installed a new SAP ABAP system, you have to perform the initial setup and configuration of the system to enable its usage. For example, you have to install an SAP license, create logon groups, and configure the Transport Management System and security settings. For the initial setup of SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP 7.4 and higher and systems based on it, we offer automation with the ABAP task manager.

Post-Copy Automation

Part of the copy or refresh of an existing system are the extensive post-copy activities that have to be performed. As part of SAP Landscape Management (fka SAP Landscape Virtualization Management), we are offering sophisticated automation content that makes the copy of every SAP ABAP system easier, faster, and more reliable. In addition to basis configuration content, we are providing more and more application-specific tasks that are automated, such as for:

  • SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW) and connected SAP BW source systems
  • SAP Business Suite:â—¦SAP Enterprise Resource Planing (SAP ERP)
  • SAP Customer Relationship Management (SAP CRM)
  • SAP Supply Chain Management (SAP SCM)

SAP Fiori Setup

For the automated setup of SAP Fiori, benefit from automation content for the configuration of ABAP 7.4 and higher systems, enabling you to perform system configuration for SAP Gateway, SAP Fiori Launchpad and SAP NetWeaver basis in an automated manner. Security Checks
