Installation of SAP Gateway for Microsoft

This document provides you with an overview of the installation process of SAP Gateway for Microsoft (GWM, formerly known as SAP NetWeaver Gateway productivity accelerator for Microsoft or GWPAM). In order to determine which software needs to be installed on which computer you first have to answer the question of which ‘flavor’ of GWM you want to utilize. Generally speaking GWM supports two main use cases (as of SP02):

  • Use Case 1: Development of .NET solution
  • Use Case 2: GWM Excel Add-In

Use Case 1: Development of .NET solution

In this use case you build .NET solutions with the help of GWM. You install the GWM Visual Studio Add-In software on developer computers along with Visual Studio. GWM provides you tools to generated solutions, which you will ultimately deploy to the end user computers.


Typical use cases are:

  • Use Case 1a: Outlook Add-In:
    Quickly generate Outlook Add-Ins using the Contact, Appointment, or Task Template with the help of the GWM wizard.
  • Use Case 1b: Excel Add-In (video):
    Utilize GWM to generate Excel Add-Ins binding a spreadsheet to an OData services with full CRUDQ capabilities
  • Use Case 1c: Other C#-based solutions consuming OData services (video):
    Utilize the Add SAP Service Reference feature provided by GWM for C#-based solutions to consume OData services provided by SAP NetWeaver Gateway. This includes solutions like Word Add-Ins, Windows Forms Applications, or Console Applications.

If your intended usage of GWM falls into any of these use cases then follow the steps outline below:

.NET Developer Computer:

Step 1: Verify that .NET developer computer meets prerequisites


Step 2: Install the GWM Visual Studio Add-In software

Step 3: Generate your solution with help of GWM

Generate your solution with the help of the various templates and tools provided by GWM. Enhance the generated solution to meet customer requirements. This is covered in detail in various Self-Pace Learning videos (see different use cases above for links to videos).

Step 4: Create installer of solution

Once you have completed the development of your solution, you need to create an installer for mass deployment to the end users. Make sure that the GWM libraries are included in your installer package (e.g. SAP.IW.GWPAM.SSO). An example of how to create an installer has been provided in chapter Creating an Installer for a GWPAM Visual Studio Add-In. Also more information on this topic can be found on MSDN, e.g. see article Deploying an Office Solution. The installer should ideally check for and handle all prerequisites of the solution.

End User Computers:

Step 5: Verify end user computers meet prerequisites

  • To verify that the end user computers meet the prerequisites of GWM following section Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2010 and 2013 of chapter GWPAM Visual Studio Add-In: Software Prerequisites
  • Additional information: See the Product Availability Matrix for GWM. Pay attention to the End User Scenario slides.
  • Ideally the prerequisites should be handled by the installer in a mass deployment scenario.


Step 6: Install solution on end user computers via installer
For a mass rollout utilize the installer to deploy the solution to the end user computers. Alternatively install the solution manually (e.g. for small rollout during testing phase).

Use Case 2: GWM Excel Add-In

With the help of the GWM Excel Add-In, you can bind a spreadsheet to an OData service to retrieve data from an SAP system. In contrast to use case 1, here you do not perform any .NET development.  The GWM Excel Add-In lets you interactively work with SAP data, e.g. editing, creating or deleting of records, directly in an Excel spreadsheet. The GWM Excel Add-In software is directly installed on end user computers.
