SQL Anywhere, on-demand edition Managing Users and User Privileges

Module 8 - Managing Users and User Privileges

In this module, you will walk through how to create and edit cloud users for the cloud and assign certain privileges to them.

Pre-requisites

You should now be familiar with creating and adding hosts, servers, and databases to the cloud. It is

expected that you have created a cloud with a minimum of two cloud servers on multiple hosts and two

databases. Some tags should be created and applied to the cloud.

Creating Users

Once you have created and started your cloud, you will need to provide other users access to the cloud. Additional users can be created and given appropriate access and action privileges depending on their role. For example, you may wish to create a cloud user for someone who will monitor databases in the cloud. You would want that user to be able to start and stop databases but not drop them. The steps below follow this example.

To create a user:

  1. On the Overview page for the cloud, click Users in the left hand navigation pane.
  2. Click Create at the top of the Users page.
  3. Fill in the relevant information for the user. In the Privileges section, various privileges are listed as well as their descriptions. To allow the user being created to perform a certain action, check the checkbox beside that privilege. Click OK.

Verifying User Privileges

You can verify that the user you just created has the privileges you granted and that the revoked privileges are not permitted.

  1. Log out of the cloud by closing all instances of your browser. Alternatively, you can open a different browser. Access the cloud and log in with the credentials of the newly created user.
  2. Using your knowledge from previous modules, stop one of the databases currently running in the cloud. After it has stopped, attempt to delete that database.
  3. An error will appear when you attempt to delete the database. The user does not have permission to perform the operation. Restart the database once you are ready to proceed.

Editing Users

To edit a user or to change a user’s privileges:

  1. Log out of the current user account and login as admin.
  2. On the Overview page for the cloud, click Users in the left hand navigation pane.
  3. Check the checkbox beside the user you would like to edit and then click Edit event subscription at the top of the dialog that appears.
  4. Edit the user as necessary and re-enter a password for the user. Click Close to confirm the change

Deleting Users

To delete users from the cloud:

  1. On the Overview page for the cloud, click Users in the left hand navigation pane.
  2. Check the checkbox beside the user(s) you would like to drop and then click Delete at the top of the panel.
