SAP Visual Intelligence Renaming FAQ

Summary:

On May 10th, 2013, SAP is announcing the renaming of SAP Visual Intelligence to SAP Lumira™. This FAQ document answers questions about the name change and its implications.

Q: Why have we renamed SAP Visual Intelligence?

SAP Lumira marks a new chapter for our Enterprise Self Service BI solutions. In the upcoming weeks and months, we will bring to market innovative solutions allowing us to realize the vision of easy to use, self-service analytics in real-time on massive amounts of data. We wanted the new name to be easily discoverable (think like Google), memorable, and something we could use for a full family of solutions.

Q: What does Lumira mean?

Lumira is derived from lumin (light in Latin) and mirar (see in Spanish). It means shedding light on and seeing the opportunity. It connotes the ideas of awakening, knowledge, and greater consciousness.

Q: What is SAP Lumira?

SAP Lumira helps analysts bring together and transform data to discover hidden insights and answers. Designed for ease of use, the software combines fast data manipulation with engaging visualizations, allowing users to explore data from a variety of enterprise and personal sources.

Q: Does this new name apply to all SAP Visual Intelligence editions?

Yes. SAP Visual Intelligence, standard edition and SAP Visual Intelligence, personal edition will also be renamed SAP Lumira, standard edition and SAP Lumira, personal edition respectively.

Q: Will the product and documentation reflect the new name? If not, when is the new name implemented?

SAP Lumira will be reflected in the Generally Available version by mid June 2013. Until that time the product and documentation will still reflect the SAP Visual Intelligence name.

Q: I am an SAP partner, what do I tell my customers?

The message to customers is that we have renamed SAP Visual Intelligence to SAP Lumira. We wanted the new name to be evocative, unusual, and memorable. SAP Lumira also marks a new chapter for our Enterprise Self Service BI solutions. In the upcoming weeks and months, we will bring to market innovative solutions allowing us to realize the vision of easy to use, self-service analytics in real time on massive amounts of data.  We know that there are downsides to such a change, and despite the inevitable disruption it may cause, we feel it is the right choice. Here are the key reasons why we are making this change:

1- As we announced earlier this week, the next version of SAP Lumira will offer tight integration with SAP’s next-generation cloud BI platform, SAP Lumira Cloud. We feel that it’s more appropriate to use a completely new name for a new self-service approach to business intelligence and analytics.

2- SAP Lumira is a more human-friendly yet search-ready name. A distinctive name makes it easier to find relevant materials (it’s one of the reasons we took the space out of “Business Objects” many years ago). And with community becoming increasingly important, this change should ultimately make it easier to find the information you need to deploy and use the products successfully.

Q: Are we changing the price of SAP Lumira?

No. We are not changing the price.

Q: Should I use the new name (SAP Lumira) if I contact Customer Support or speak with other SAP representatives?

Yes you can. SAP staff is being made aware of the new name so that they can be better prepared to work with our customers and partners.

Q: Does the new name apply to SAP BusinessObjects Explorer?

No. We are not renaming SAP BusinessObjects Explorer. SAP Lumira and SAP BusinessObjects Explorer are complementary and integrated. SAP Lumira allows Analysts to load, mash-up and manipulate data and then share their results back into SAP BusinessObjects Explorer for distribution over the web and onto mobile devices.

Q: Can I still buy SAP Lumira online?

Yes. You can purchase SAP Lumira, standard edition and SAP Lumira, personal edition from the SAP Store.
