What is SAP's understanding of globalization?

Tags:

If you search for a definition of globalization you may find a huge number of various results and all of them differ from the context in which the term is used.

If we talk about globalization at SAP we fragment the term into three parts - Internationalization, Localization and Translation. Let me give a short introduction about the understanding of globalization at SAP.

Internationalization refers to the technical enablement of a system to operate globally, which aims that the software can be used in culturally and technically diverse environments. Topics of Internationalization are Unicode, printing and display such as right-to-left for Hebrew and Arabic, user-specific date, time, and address formats, multiple currencies etc.

Localization refers to functions which are dedicated to the needs in a specific country to cover local best business practices, legal requirements and statutory reporting such as billing, tax calculation or financial reporting.

Translation means to speak the language of the locals. SAP Language Services assures that SAP products are translated into as many as 39 languages – product user interface, documentation and collaterals.

These three pillars build the foundation of SAP Globalization Services where we cover globalization of SAP solutions across the entire solution portfolio, covering legal requirements as well as local best business practices, translation and technical prerequisite for language support.
