This document provides frequently asked questions for Java post-copy automation offered by SAP Landscape Virtualization Management.


1 General

1.1 What is Java post-copy automation?

Java post-copy automation automates many of the crucial activities that have to be performed after the system copy or system refresh of a system based on SAP NetWeaver Application Server Java, such as SAP Enterprise Portal. It is offered as part of SAP Landscape Virtualization Management. Instead of performing post-copy activities manually, profit from expert knowledge in machine-readable format and make your overall system copy experience easier, faster and more reliable.

1.2 How are the post-copy activities automated?

The automation is performed with the stand-alone task manager for lifecycle management automation, a light-weight, reliable and easy-to-use framework SAP is using to automate many activities in several areas. It is a stand-alone tool that you can just download and execute on your laptop or host, as it is self-contained and does not require an additional local runtime, lowering the entry barrier dramatically. The tool then connects to the corresponding Java back-end system to perform the automation activities – although a certain SP level is required on the Java system, functionalities required in the Java back-end systems get deployed on the back-end system as servlet automatically as part of the post-copy automation process (and get un-deployed at the end of the process), also ensuring that the overall automation experience is easy and fast.

1.3 How does Java post-copy automation relate to SAP Landscape Virtualization Management?

Java post-copy automation is part of the SAP Landscape Virtualization Management offering. You can perform the automated Java post-copy activities either integrated as part of the reliable and fast end-to-end system copy and refresh process of SAP Landscape Virtualization Management (including automated cloning with network isolation, system rename and automated post-copy activities) or run it stand-alone without having SAP Landscape Virtualization Management installed or involved.

2. Offering

2.1 Which use cases are supported?

You can execute both the automated activities after an initial system copy process (where a new system is created as copy of a source system) and after the refresh of an existing system.

2.2 What activities are covered for the initial Java system copy?

The following Java basis post-copy activities are automated in case of an initial system copy:

  • RFC destination parameters get adapted
  • Security configuration (including SSL Key Store and Ticket KeyStore settings)
  • Property setting of SAP Search and Classification (TREX)
  • Configuration of system landscape directory (including SLD CIM client and SLD HTTP configuration settings)

2.3 What activities are covered for Java system refresh?

The following Java basis post-copy activities are automated in case of the refresh of an existing system:

  • RFC destination parameters get adapted
  • Security configuration (including SSL Key Store and Ticket KeyStore settings)

2.4 What platforms do you support for the framework?

Currently, you can run the stand-alone task manager for lifecycle management automation on Microsoft Windows, although we plan to provide the framework also on further operating systems – see SAP Note 1616352 for more information (SMP login required).

2.5 What platforms and releases do you support for the Java back-end systems?

You can automate the post-copy activities of all SAP systems based on SAP NetWeaver Java with the following releases:

  • SAP NetWeaver AS Java 7.00 SP21 upwards
  • SAP NetWeaver AS Java 7.01 SP05 upwards
  • SAP NetWeaver AS Java 7.02 SP04 upwards
  • SAP NetWeaver AS Java 7.30 and upwards

2.6 What features does the framework offer?

With the stand-alone task manager for lifecycle management automation, you can easily create and maintain variants of the pre-delivered automation task lists that can then be executed without dialog phase (such as part of the automated end-to-end system copy and refresh process with SAP Landscape Virtualization Management offering a fast and reliable system copy experience with the push of a button) or with some parameters predefined by you.  After the execution, you find detailed information in the log file for every performed activity, offering full transparency on the automation process.

2.7 What future activities are planned to get automated for Java?

Java post-copy automation already covers the most important Java basis activities. If you have the requirement to get more activities automated, enter your requirement or any idea for improvement on SAP Idea Place (category System Provisioning) and expose it to the community. There, you can also browse, collaborate and vote on ideas entered by other customers.

3. Usage

3.1 How can I get Java post-copy automation?

You get the framework and the automation content via SAP Landscape Virtualization Management. Just download the archive to a folder and unzip/unpack the downloaded file – while the user needs write access to this folder, administrator rights are not required.
