Semantic Harmonization - The Next Big Leap for SOA (Or: Thousand Island Hopping, SOA Style)

From a technical point of view, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) has reached a level which allows its adoption and use in real-life enterprise environments. While being a necessary and important prerequisite, this is only a first leg on the way to fulfill the vision of enabling end-to-end business processes. To reach this goal, semantic harmonization becomes a cornerstone to leverage SOA from the technical level to the business level. This article explains the current gap, illustrates the importance of semantic harmonization as the next big leap for SOA, and shows how this is reflected in message-based service-oriented environments.
