Hi MDM experts,
I am interesting about becoming MDM expert and want to as your opinion about it.
I am an ABAP expert and also I am also working on XI. I specialized in integration technology and I am heavily on the technical side.
1.Do you think it is reasonable to switch to MDM? Of course I would also like to be more marketable and I thought it can be done
via I gaining MDM knowledge as the basic Netweaver component. Is it true that it is a growing market ?What are the benefits of doing it ?
2.What about the learning process ? What do I need to learn and how long you think takes for technical consultant to switch to MDM.
3.Is there only technical aspect of MDM in therms of work (as in R/3) or it is different and I really have to work on both u2013 technical and functional(business)
Please clarify what will be the technical side of MDM if such exist
4.Is the certification worth and how difficult is to get certified. Can I certify only by reading the materials. Please share your experience about it.
Thank you all in advance!
Bob
Hi Bob,
MDM as we know stands for Master Data Management.
It is a known truth that MDM is the hot topic and most valuable platform in the market.
We can say that MDM is a mixture of both Technical and Business, i.e. you are expected to work as a Technial Consultant as well as a Business Analyst, which would help you to enhance your skills.
Apart from that to know the expectations, roles and responsibilities of MDM Consultant you can refer to my Blog Roles and Responsibilities of MDM Consultant

What MDM is all about???
Here we basically deal with the Master Data i.e. master data is taken from various systems that a Business have and then steps are taken to make the Master data non-redundant inorder to maintain data consistency and data quality.
There are three basic scenarios that we follow in MDM:
Data Consolidation
Data Harmonization
Central Master Data Management
Consolidation :
1. Cleansing and de-duplication
2. Data normalization including categorization and taxonomy management
3. New interactive consolidation capabilities
Data Harmonization :
1. Automated synchronization of globally relevant master data information
2. New Interactive distribution capabilities
Central Master Data Management :
1. Central creation and maintenance of data
2. Ongoing master data quality

Hi,
MDM seems to be the right option for you as you already know ABAP and XI. ABAP will enable you to understand and innovate solutions using MDM ABAP API's and XI is required is almost all MDM projects to integrate MDM with other systems in landcape.
However, don't just stick to the technical details of MDM. Understanding the importance of 'Enterprise Data Management' (EDM) and how it should be implemented, is essential to become a successful MDM consultant.

Hi Bob,
Forget what is your background, SAP tells that if you want to learn SAP MDM there is no such a prerequisite.
It is good that you have a knowledge of SAP XI. XI gives strength to MDM to support data upload & download process. You have a good chance to switch to MDM. If you see SAP MDM roadmap, it will be powerful tool in 2010. Certification of MDM is not much difficult now cause MDM is now in its developing stage.
So gear up, move to MDM now.

1) MDM is picking up the market now and with its very stable version ( MDM 7.1) due to get released very soon , evryone of us including SAP has high hopes on this product.
Also all the companies will be finally moving to the concept of ESOA and for doing that MDM is the base for it.
For more details, go through this link below:
2) MDM is a tool which is integrated with many source systems. ANd there are a lot of integration scenarios possible with it. Alsos MDM has basicaaly 4 components:
2.1 Console
2.2 Import Manager
2.3 Data Manager
2.4 Syndicator
You can start going through the refrence guides for them
Below are links to help you on learning MDM:

3. MDM requires a person to be techno-functional. Its basically a modeling tool but require a lot of analysis and skills to design the data model. Hence it is always better to be a techno-functional guy.
4. MDM certifrication is a rare skill and not much people are certiifed. Hence I would advice you to go for the certification once you are confidet with MDM. Pl go through the link for info:

Do you think it is reasonable to switch to MDM? Of course I would also like to be more marketable and I thought it can be done
via I gaining MDM knowledge as the basic Netweaver component. Is it true that it is a growing market ?What are the benefits of doing it ?
- With So much of high end Techincal knowledge on Netweaver components it will definitely help to learn MDM as well as MDM is also an important area in the netweaver stack which deals with on eof the Vital areas in the IT landscape which is MASTER DATA.The market ofr MDM is already HOT in the west and is alo building here in Asia.
What about the learning process ? What do I need to learn and how long you think takes for technical consultant to switch to MDM.
- To pick up MDM you need to be Techno- Functional as there is a lot of Business sense required when dealing with the master dat aof any organisation.Technically MDM is not that deficult to learn as it is a configuration driven tool based on C++ designing but on the tool it self you do not have to do any coding but just configurations.
A Quick learner can pick up MDM is 2 weeks time .
Is there only technical aspect of MDM in therms of work (as in R/3) or it is different and I really have to work on both u2013 technical and functional(business)
- As already mentioned above MDM does have a functional edge to it so you will have to integrate with differnt SAP and Non SAP sytems when working with MDM.So a basic functionla knowledge is a must. The technical challeneg would be in the transportation and exchange of data between diff sytems and debugging in case of errors also when you work with so many sytems i place the challenges will be also many.
.Is the certification worth and how difficult is to get certified. Can I certify only by reading the materials. Please share your experience about it.
- certification will definitely help in gaining recognisition and access to good oppurtunities but as a beginner in MDM it will be tough as the certification course for MDM is vast which includesa lot of real time scenario which you will be able toa nswer only after experience.
Hope It Helped,
Thanks & Regards
