Central Master Data Management Scenarios

Hi Folks,

What are the different ways of implementing a Central Master Data Management Scenario for Material Master ?

I am looking for thoughts around ...

1) is it implemented for ALL materials at the same time or is it done is phased roll outs --- like say .. material type wise, etc.

2) what are the different ways of doing a a phased out of material master into MDM

Regards

Vinay

Hi Vinay,

CMDM for nay business object can be done in two phases.

1) Firstly cleanse all the exisiting Masters for eg material

master by extracting all of them using an ETL tool or even XI will do and then use the matching strategies in MDM to identify the dupicate masters for all the exisiting materials.

2)The second part would be to start creating new materials centrally thorugh MDM.

In the case I worked out. After taking care of all the exisiting material master we created new fresh materials in MDM through EP.

This gave us the added advantageto allow cretion of new materials through an online interface like web.Besides all the materials once created gets in the MDM workflow where the data custodians resposible for material caretion would ensure the proper cration through the MDM governance provided through Workflows.

We had restricted the material cretion to only certain MRO material types using effective validation sfor the same.

Kindly follow the below link to understand CMDM in a better way

Hope It Helped,

Kindly Reward Points if found useful

Thanks for your elaborate reply.

Do you mean to say that ALL material creation happened through EP ?

We have a situation where only some of the material types and some of the users need to use MDM for a Central Master Data Management Scenario scenario. Others would continue to work in R/3. The problem is how do we restrict some material types and some users in R/3 from creating materials.

Hi,

You can restrict the flow down to other systems by setting filters at the distribution model.

Thank you.

Hi Vinay

One simple suggestion: for all the Material type to be managed by CMDM have the number range assigned as External and Use MDM Auto ID for generating this.Any new material will be created via Portal with MDM generated ID and that will be syndicated to ECC.

For material type to be controlled in ECC have the number range as Internal and define suitable number range.

You can also control creation of Material type in MDM using Validations in Data manager.

Hi Vinay,

Some of the material types and some of the users need to use MDM for a Central Master Data Management Scenario scenario. Others would continue to work in R/3. The problem is how do we restrict some material types and some users in R/3 from creating materials.

- It is not always necessary that all Material be created in MDM it is landscape dependent however if you are going in for a Central Master Data Management then the objective is to have a central storage of updtaed Master data in one place which is MDM.

- To Restrict certain user from creating only certain material types recrords you can create a validation in MDM data manager that will allow only material of those types for all other types it will throw you an error.

- To Restrict only certain users to create those materials you will have to create according roles in MDM console and assign Users to them and then constraint those Roles to only viewing and editing the allowed material types rec.

For doing this you will have to create Named search on those material types and in Console Roles Functions/tables and Fields column you will have to constraint that role to that named search. So in this way only restricted user will work on restricted material types dynamically.

You can refer the below link to undersatnd how named searches work:

Hi Vinay,

I think you mean following scenario:

Material type A is maintained in MDM, Material type B is maintained in R/3.

Usually, not everything is maintained in MDM, just the general data, so the scenario could be as follows:

MatType A general view is maintained in MDM - Plant view is maintained in R/3,

MatType B is fully maintained in R/3.

To restrict the users in R/3 just to be able to maintain Type B fully, they'll get a R/3 authorization role with Transactions MM01, MM02...etc restricted on Type B.

To restrict the users in R/3 just to be able to maintain Plant views, you must create a transaction variant (e.g. ZMM01) which allows only to extend the material in that type. The creation of general view will be done in MDM.

It's a lot of communication and training work...

Thanks Folks,

We went ahead and created a restriction on just the basic view for a role and mapped all users of the business unit live on MDM have that role. This way Users could create in MDM but not in R/3.
