If an SAP instance does not start after making changes to the instance profile via RZ10, what is the best course of action?
after chaning and activating profle in rz10 existing profile will be backed up automatically with extension .BAK just rename existing pofile with some other name and remove .BAK extension of old profile to activate and restrt the instance

Check your dialog work process..There should be minimum number of dialog work process available.If it doesn't start even after having the minimum dialog work process,revert back the changes made or you may check for the .BAK file of the having old profile parameter details

u need to take a backup the profiles before applying any changes to the instance profile.other wise check whether any backup file is existing or not in the profile directory for instance profile.

As server is not up so only option would be to revert back the changes you made and restart the server from os level.
