after installing SAP NW04s from DVDs, the gateway process does not start automatically (I have to start it manually). Do I need to install gateway as stand-alone?

I think you can amend your start profile to start up gwrd executables. Example, see SAP note 80474

Hi,

Ingeneral GWRD process starts on each instance automatically even it is not specifically mentioned in the start profile. Just provide additional information like whether you installed seperate gateway instance for your system and or your system is of time ABAP/J2EE.

Thanks,

Kiran.

here is a little more backgound. I did NOT install a dedicated gateway instance. I am using Web AS Java (no ABAP).

Note 80474 applies to a dedicated gateway installation (I do not have the START_G00 prpofile file mentioned in the note.

any other suggestions?

Hi,

Install Stand-alone Gateway and start the gateway instance.
