MDM stands for Master Data management where we take data from various source systems and clean and consildate it.
Then we harmonize ( export) the data back to the repective systems. SInce so many systems are involved in these projects/scenarios, a middle ware is always required.
You are from XI backgound and you learning MDM will be more useful and helpful fro your career. As XI is used for many integration scenarios.
Your profile of XI + MDM is a great boost for you.

Coming to how you must do it, let me tell you that MDM has basically 4 components:
1. Console
2. Import Manager
3. Data Manager
4. Syndicator

Hi Amruth,
In my opinion, if you see that MDM is basically a tool for consolidating, Harmonizing and centrally maintaining the Master Data. For this MDM has to techinally integrate with many other components such as SAP R3, SAP BI, SRM, CRM and so many other SAP and non-SAP systems. And XI being a middleware is used in almost all the technical integration scenarios. Whereas Bi is a reporting tool, but has already been established in the Market. But MDM is picking the Market right now and not much people are in MDM. Hence as a career I would advice you to opt for MDM.
