Hi,

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a set of standards for structuring information that is to be

electronically exchanged between and within businesses, organizations.

EDI is used to send a messages, it is one of the way to send messages.

Mainly we are using two versions of EDIs.

ANSI X12 : The US people generally using this one.

EDI FACT : The Europian countries using this one.

EDI is a 3 digits number....The real time used documents are;

850 - Purchase Order

856 - ASN Advanced shipment notice or delivery

810 - Invoice.

855 - Pruchase order acknowledgement

997 - Functional Acknowledgement

860 - PO Change

864 - Text message.

The below links will give you the complete info about EDI

Hi

EDI

An inter-company, application-to-application communication of data in standard format for business transactions, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a set of standards for structuring information that is to be electronically exchanged between and within businesses, organizations, government entities and other groups. The standards describe structures that emulate documents, for example purchase orders to automate purchasing. The term EDI is also used to refer to the implementation and operation of systems and processes for creating, transmitting, and receiving EDI documents.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) can be formally defined as 'The transfer of structured data, by agreed message standards, from one computer system to another without human intervention'

Despite being relatively unheralded, in this era of technologies such as XML web services, the Internet and the World Wide Web, EDI is still the data format used by the vast majority of electronic commerce transactions in the world.

The EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) standards were designed to be independent of communication and software technologies. EDI can be transmitted using any methodology agreed to by the sender and recipient. This includes a variety of technologies, including modem (asynchronous, and bisynchronous), FTP, Email, HTTP, AS1, AS2, etc

There are four major sets of EDI standards:

u2022The UN-recommended UN/EDIFACT is the only international standard and is predominant outside of North America.

u2022The US standard ANSI ASC X12 (X12) is predominant in North America.

u2022The TRADACOMS standard developed by the ANA (Article Numbering Association) is predominant in the UK retail industry.

u2022The ODETTE standard used within the European automotive industry

This is just FYI

Seeburger adapter is used for EDI implementation:

Seeburger adapters like OFTPS,AS2,X400 are used for B2B scenario where the file is coming through WAn network or mailbox. As XI dont have capability to convert the EDIFACT format file to XML the same work will be done by seeburger adapters.

The SEEBURGER Business Integration Converter (BIC) is an any-to-any format converter, used to translate EDI data and legacy data formats into XML and vice versa. It can also be used for complex, high performance XML-to-XML mappings or to interface to existing JDBC data sources.

Supported EDI formats include:

• ANSI

• EDIFACT

• INHOUSE

• IDOC

• XML Schema

• XML DTD

• CSV

• Delimited Data

• positional data

• SWIFT

• EANCOM

and many more.

Hope this is usefull

Thanks
