Hi Good day,
I agree with kaushal want to add little info
Kernel upgrade is required to increase run time performance of the system
kernel contans 3 types of executables
OS -
DB -
SAP -
For example when u are starting a sap system sapcpe.exe is trigerred & strdbs.cmd , Msg_server.exe & disp+work.exe
when these executable s are of latest release it will increase the run time performance of the system.
After installation when we execute SICK or SM28 it will check the consistency between OS DB & R3 executables
Support packs are for added functionality specific to that component as more info is provided by kaushal

Hi,
SAP Kernel:
The SAP system consists in general terms of a kernel and applications. The kernel is the central program that is essential to the SAP system applications.
The advantage is that you gain the latest kernel, incorporating the most up-to-date program patches and other improvements, while avoiding the extra effort of a full application upgrade. For example, this is very useful if you plan to do a full upgrade at a later date but still want to benefit from the latest kernel immediately.
SAP support package:
A Support Package contains quality improvements for the SAP system or makes adjustments, due to legal changes for example. The objects in question are replaced in your system.
Each Support Package is valid for only one release (but for all databases and operating systems) and requires an exactly defined number of predecessors. The upgrade in the following release or correction contains all the Support Packages from previous versions that were available up to the delivery of the upgrade.
