User cannot print when AS400 IFS is being backuped

Hi,

My system has daily backup at 12am, normally it starts with data library backup then followed by IFS backup.

When it comes to the time for IFS backup, my other user from other zone will start using the system since it is morning in their timezone.

During that time when users try to perform printing it failed. From the log it shows below message

Unable to open file /usr/sap/PRD/DVEBMGS01/data/000yJccD.PRD for writing (error 16)

Initially we don't know what caused the problem because after 1 or 2 hours the printing issue is resolved by itself. Until recently only we suspect this problem is due to the IFS backup.

As interim solution, we have started the IFS backup 2 hours earlier and now still monitoring if the printing problem persists.

Questions

a.) Is the problem really caused by the IFS backup ? Have you guys experienced it ?

b.) What other solution or option do I have ?

Comment and advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Regards,

Kent

Hi Kent,

good analyzation ))

Yes, it is caused by that and everybody has that, that is doing a backup like you ...

That's why I typically suggest to exclude /usr/sap/PRD/DVEBMGS01/data from the backup (*OMIT)

Dear Volker Gueldenpfennig,

Emm .. excluding the .../data/ directory could be a good idea, but does it matter not to include that directory in the backup ? a backup without that directory is sufficient for recovery purpose ?

thanks

Hi Kent,

in an ABAP environement, essential is the r3siddata - the IFS is more or less neglectable - I typically do NOT use it for recovery ...

Hi Kent,

We are taking the daily backup only the R3* libraries.

I think no need to take IFS every day. Weekly or Monthly is better.

Thanks

Jibin.
