Hi Ajit,

If you are trying to create a material in R/3 system in that case if you have multiple R/3 systems than you have to create the material seperately and also if any changes are done in one system than the would not be reflected in the othere system due to which the User will not come to know that which R/3 system data is correct.

To solve this particular problem MDM is used. As MDM helps in creation of master data, i.e. the material that you are creating is a master record that will be created in MDM and in future if any changes are to be done that would be done

on that master data only.

There is a process known as Syndication in MDM through which if any changes that are done on any of the master data record are syndicated (distributed) to all the respective systems that uses that data.

For Eg:

Say a material is created with the Manufacture number as 123.

Now in case of MDM this material will be saved as the master data and also this record will be send to all the respective R/3 systems that the business use.

And if in the due course of time we change the Manufacturer number to 456.

Now changes can only be done on the Master record.

As soon as MDM System is set up for any Business, after that all the operations related to a record are done on Master Record only.

As soon as the changes are done on the record the record is then syndicated (Distributed) to various other R/3 systems for updation.

Basically MDM helps in keeping the data correct and consistent and ensure that there should be no deduplication of data.

Hope this would be helpful..

If helpful do reward points!!!!!

Hi Ajit,

You may have multiple R/3 systems. So if you have created a material in one R3 system then other will not know that, it is a duplicate. MDM helps to identify you the duplicates across the remote systems.

Second thing MDM helps in checking duplicates based on normalized values of the key fields.

After deduplication when you need to store that material in different R3 systems, MDM can automatically take care of all the remote system specific requirements.

Hope this helps you to understand the need for MDM.
