Hi,
There is no portal in XI, instead it comes under PeopleIntegration stack of SAP Netweaver.
Coming to IR & ID frameworks as you know IR is for designing and the ID is for Configuration.
>>WHy we have separate IR and ID parts? Why they two have not clubed into one?
SAP has developed these tools and may be they want to segregate the design & configuration into two frameworks as design and configuration have different functionality in XI architecutre.

Hi Vijay,
SAP XI centrally manages the integration knowledge in the Integration Repository and Directory. The Integration Repository gathers together all objects relevant for shipment (see: Design) while the contents of the Integration Directory must be configured at the customer site for the particular system landscape (see: Configuration).
Integration Builder: Design - Integration Repository
Integration Builder: Configuration - Integration Directory
All design objects in OR are later on used in the configuration part ID.

Hi Vijay,
I am not sure about Portal in XI. But generally Enterprise Portal is used to design web pages. It is in People Integration stack in SAP Netweaver.
Why we have separate IR and ID parts? Why they two have not clubed into one?
IR design interfaces are independent in nature. It is not required to provide data like who is the receiver, what adapter is needed etc for IR interfaces. So you can configure it as per your need in the ID. (This is mainly for reusable purpose)
SAP ships many IR objects with its products. This is called Enterprise Services (example is SNC system). So you can configure it according to your need in ID.
This is the reason, why SAP didn't club IR and ID into one...

Vivek LR.

Hi Vijai,
There is 2 tools in XI. One is IR and another one is ID.
IR is used for Mappings creating Datatypes. In IR We dont bother about from where source is coming and where target is going. I.e., source and target environments like its file system,mail,proxy,--etc.
ID is used for Configuration of Souce and Target here we will think about source and target environments. which adapters we have to use and what configuration settings we have to do.
All Configuration done in ID.
Thanks,
RamuV
