Hi,
1) what are alerts?
An alert is a notification informing its recipients that a critical or very important situation has arisen. The situation is as severe that an action must be taken immediately in order to resolve the situation. The system recognizes the situation and sends the alert.
2)what is use of alerts?
Alert Management (ALM) is an ideal solution if you can identify specific business or technical situations that are critical and could escalate efficient operation, and you want specific parties to be informed if these situations arise. The basic functionality of Alert Management is to provide framework for informing administrators and/or users about business-critical problems.
Alerts within XI give us a simple way to monitor only those errors that we want and send alert messages to different people depending on the alert category. You can send alert to alert inbox, mail or even on SMS if cell phone operator gives us the possibility of sending SMS through a web service.
3)how do we create?
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d0/d4b54020c6792ae10000000a155106/frameset.htm
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/49/cbfb40f17af66fe10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm
4)how do you use it in real time?
Alert Management helps to prevent delays in the processing of critical situations, because the time between discovering and responding to such situations is reduced considerably.
For Eg:In the database table if one source entry is referred by multiple target entries then it becomes ambiguous state in fetching the relevant value. Immediately this problem can be intimated to the Operations Support team through XI(from XI prospective).
Alerts can add tremendous value to your business processes. A business process can execute thousands of times a day, you only need to know if an exception has occurred in the process. The alert framework in SAP NetWeaver can notify you of these alerts.

Hi
*ALERT*
An Alert is a notification informing its recipients that a critical or very important situation has arisen. The
situation is as severe that an action must be taken immediately in order to resolve the situation. The
system recognizes the situation and sends the Alert. We use the Alert Configuration to have the system inform you of errors during message processing. we can receive the Alert by e-mail, fax, or SMS.
Also it is a function of Runtime Workbench along with Message archiving,End-to-end monitoring, Performance Monitoring,Cache monitoring.
Alerting is no longer dependent on the configuration and activation of end-to-end
monitoring. Consequently, the delay between when an error occurs in message
processing and the creation of an alert is significantly reduced. Furthermore, you no
longer need to schedule the report SXMSALERT_PROCESS_DATA_GET as a
background job.The Runtime Workbench has CCMS Alert Monitor thru which
You can now configure one new CCMS Alert Monitor per Adapter Engine for
adapter-specific processing errors.Alerts triggered by the Runtime Workbench can now be forwarded to the CCMS Alert
Monitor and displayed there.
See also SAP Note 824039.
Thru Runtime Workbench we can access alert inbox, alert configuration
In process Integration with Central SAP Monitoring Infrastructure we Drill down to individual process steps and Use SAP Web AS Alert Framework.
In SAP Web AS Alert Framework, we Classify errors and Alert channels (such as e-mail) available.

Alerts propagated through E-Mail, SMS,
In Monitoring the SAP Exchange Infrastructure, Message Alerting is part of Runtime Workbench.

What is an Alerts
An alert is a message that comes as an email to your alert inbox or your mail box, when triggered in case of an error or exception in the XI system messages.
What all the cases we go for Alerts
When we want to intimate the business users about the failure of a message, we will go for an alert.
For example, you are sending an invoice to your customer via XI.
For some reason, it has failed in XI.
The business user (Using the backend system) will never know what happened after it reached XI.
So, there is a need that we let the user know what happened in XI.
This can be done via Alerts.

How to test an Alert
Configure the alert as described by Vijaya.
Then pass in correct data from backend so that an error occurs in XI.
This way, an alert is triggered.
YOu can checkfor yourself, if a mail is sent or not.

Ravi

hi,
For notifications of errors or warnings, failure in the system , we generate alerts. Using alert we can send email, fax, sms etc to notify the appropriate person.
This is how we configure
Define an alert category, Create alert category (TCODE ALRTCATDEF with authorization SAP_XI_ADMINISTRATOR)
Provide Details Receiver,Title , Test and container variable that are filled at runtime
Follow up activity
Create rule (Rule name, Alert Category that needs to be used, required error category and error code)
Additional message attributes for sender and receiver and choose add rule
then the rule gets activated

Also just go through Raising Exceptions in SAP XI Mapping and see if it helps you solve the problem.

To send an EMAIL, assign an EMAIL ID to the corresponding user in the transaction SU01 and then set up SCOT and you can send emails when the ALERT is triggered..
Once you have configure Alerts, you will get the Alerts into ALERT INBOX in RWB of the user. To also get the email, the following needs to be done,
1. In SU01 -- Assign the Email ID for the Recipient of the ALERT.
2. In , RWB>ALERT INBOX> PERSONALIZATION--> Time Independent Delivery and Email are selected.
3. Finally, SCOT needs to be set up to send Emails. Check this for the same. You can ask your BASIS team to do this step.

Also, In ALRTCATDEF, go to SETTINGS--> CONFIGURATION. By default, the option selected is INTERNAL PROCESSING. Select the option SMTP FORWARDING AS XML and give the email id. This will enable you to send an email alert whenever an error occurs in XI.
