Hello,
you can find Sun's support statements regarding Java SE 6 at http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/system-configurations.html. Installation instructions are available at http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jre/install-linux.html.
The Java Plugin is required for running Java Applets in a browser like Mozilla.
Installation instructions are available at http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jre/manual-plugin-install-linux.html
For running SAP GUI for Java as a stand alone application, it is not required.
You can find the system requirements for SAP GUI for Java 7.10 in [SAP note 959236|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/959236]. It includes support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.
The manual of SAP GUI for Java can be found on SMP where you downloaded the installer.
You will find there the system requirements as well as the command to launch the installer, in your case
java -jar PlatinGUILNX_4-10003510.JAR
Best regards
Rolf-Martin

also, there seem to be 2 install formats for jdk 5.0 viz..
Self-extracting Binary File
RPM Packages
which one is better?
is JAVA PLUG IN a must for accessing even R3 servers and also how can we register it with mozilla, if required?

Hello. Are you have the "presentation" CD for Netweaver ? In this CD you can find JAVA gui documentation :
For example about Linux :
"
Supported Linux distributions:
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
These Distributions are tested and officially supported.
We expect that SAP GUI runs with other distributions as well and appreciate any feedback about potential problems.
Make sure the distribution you want to use is supported by your Java vendor!
You can find Sun's support statements at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/install-linux.html and http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jre/install-linux.html
For supported locales and writing systems, please refer to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/intl/locale.doc.html and http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/intl/locale.doc.html
SAP tries to make sure that the SAP GUI for the Java Environment runs on other combinations as well. But please note that the solution of problems caused by the Java Runtime depends on the support of the Java vendor."
It's from SAP manual for JAVA GUI.
Regards.
