hi friends, in variant configuration when we create a sales order for a customer, shall we manufacture the same product or it would have already manufactured and simply we have to transfer the material from manufacture plant to the nearest plant of the customer ? please reply me

You use variant configuration when you have material with different configurations or features.

For example take material 'steel rods'.

These steel rods can have different dimensions. Since, you cannot have material record for each dimension, you use variant configuration.

There is another concept called make to order with variant configuration.

So coming to your questions, variant materials could be something which are already manufactured with different dimensions or features OR materials which are manufactured as per customer orders.

As already mentioned, there are 2 scenarios in variant configuration.

Make to order

In this scenario, you create a sales order with a particular configuration. Based on your requirement, the material is manufactured/procured and delivered. Before creating the order, may be only the subcomponents will be available in the plant and not the final product is assembled.

Make to Stock

Based on the requirement over a period of time, materials of specific configuration are manufactured and kept in stock. While creating the saels order, we can configure in such a way that if the configuration in sales order is same as the configuration of the material in stock, then the material number entered in sales order can be replaced by the standard stock material available. This functionality is called variant matching.Enabling variant matching for make to stock scenario requires some more configuration at the item category level. Even without variant matching, we can sell the material based on the configuration.

Hello,

Variant configuration is used when you are manufacturing the product based on the customer requirements.

The customer may ask for changes in the exesting product range also, that time class and characteristics will be created and the order will be generated. Mostly in variant configuarion, the production will start once customer gies the requirement and sales order created.

Prase
