Dear balaji

The rate of duty on a single material can vary according to which chapter ID it is listed under Excise .

We can also call it as International Tariff Heading and to know more about this, please go through this link

[Tariff Heading|http://www.imf.org/external/np/leg/tlaw/2007/eng/ith.pdf]

thanks

Balaji,

Chapter ID

The number given to a material in the schedules of materials published by the government of India. The schedule lists all materials involved in manufacturing, input materials and output materials alike. It shows how much excise duty is levied on each material. Each material in the schedule is assigned its own identification code, called "chapter ID."

e.g., The schedule contains an entry for ceramic roofing tiles, which are liable to basic excise duty at 16%. The chapter ID associated with these tiles is 6903.10.

The excise tariff is divided into chapters 96 of them all. The chapters are divided into sections and the sections are subdivided further.

If you are familiar with the ITC-HS code, then it uses this. ITC HS by the way stands for International Trade Classification- Harmonised system. This is a system where each and every product is classified much like the doey decimal system in a library to out it simply.

This is an 8 digit classification something like 9999.99.99

The first four digits stands for the chapter, the second two to the section and the last two to the material classification,

So Every material is identified this way. Each section in a chapter or sometimes the chapter as a whole has a single rate of excise duty. This is the way excise tariff is made by the CBEC.

Now in SAP the chapter IDs are maintained and so is the material.

Especially in exports, ITC-HS is used universally so every country knows what material and what customs code they are dealing with. hence in SAP when you define the Chapter ID , the excise rate is maintained against the material and a chapter ID combination.

Hope this is clear. The same can used in outputs in relevant places.

Any questions?
