ID Mapping table in SAP MDM

Hi,

I read in SAP Netweaver dummies book about SAP MDM. I have doubht on ID Mapping table.

Under Content Consolidation:

1. Master Data is subjected to variety of matching algorithms to identify duplicate data.

2. After the duplicate data is found, an ID mapping table is created so that duplicates can be indentified later on during report analysis or other processing.

3. Then ID mapping table can be loaded into the SAP Business Intelligence.

In my case we have a number of tables in MDM, where a common column is present in all the tables. Can you please explain this concept, and how would the "ID Mapping Table" help in my case.
