The simple example is our day today life. When we plan a personal or official tour, what we normally do. We reserve ticket in flight / trains in advance, which means, you are reserving your seat to have a comfortable journey. Likewise, for production also, based on the complexity of procurement, if you have some safety stock for a specified operation, that is called reservation of material.
We can also call this reservation as safety stock to meet the sales demand and to overcome from any untoward shortfall or crisis.
thanks

Hi SAP 11,
Reservation
A request to the warehouse or stores to keep a material ready for issue at a future date for a certain purpose.
The purpose of a reservation is to ensure that a material is available when required. A material can be reserved for a cost center, a plant, or an order.
I hope it will clear for you,
Regards,
Murali.
