Dear experts,

We are having ECC 6.0 system running on Windows 2003 MSSQL platform. We have performed

java Add IN activity , since system is running fine but when we execute transaction SM21 we get

lot of junk chanracters as show below. I have found 2 notes relevant 688089 , 45580 which talks about deletion of Slog files and restart SAP and OS

But i dont have files called Slog under location \usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\global

Please advice a workaround.

Just to add:

Running a non-Unicode backend with Java Addin is not supported - see

Note 975768 - Deprecation of Java features with non-Unicode Backend

Markus,

Does it indicate we must go for Non-Unicode to Unicode conversion or IS there any workaround ???

Kindly confirm.

Thanks for the note.

A Java system can only be connected to a Unicode backend, be it an Addin or a standalone Java installation. It may technically work with a non-Unicode system but you have limitations (see the note). In case any problems relating to this will arise, there´s no workaround.

All successor versions of ERP 6.0 are Unicode only so if you want to upgrade you will need to convert. Additionally, if you plan to install other systems from the business suite (CRM, BI) they are Unicode only too and connecting them to your non-Unicode backend can be cumbersome, especially if you have other languages than Latin-1 based languages.

I highly recommend doing a Unicode migration.

Markus,

Thanks for your comments. Because we have BI 7.0 system connected and running with our PRD system ( non-Unicode with java Add-In ) but still we are not facing any problem...may be because we have portal also configured on same BI system which is Unicode and we are just pulling data from R3.

But as a matter of fact we may face issues in future.

Could you please give me some hints on Non-unicode to Unicode conversion * process , challenges , any detail note or guide* for the same.I am not even aware how conversion works and what are tools used if any. Please let me know

Appreciate your recommendations.

Hi,

check service.sap.com/unicode

also check Note 551344 - Unicode Conversion

A Unicode conversion is technically and export via R3load, deletion and re-import using R3load with a Unicode kernel into a Unicode database.

http://service.sap.com/unicode@sap

--> Unicode Conversion Guides

There download the guide which is appropriate for your current support package level (SAP_BASIS).

The conversions guides are pretty huge, many notes are referred. The technical conversion itself is not difficult, make sure you check that all your self developed programs are Unicode enabled (transaction UCCHECK) but all the steps are covered in the guides.

take backup and delete following at OS level.

kaushal,

According to note i have already deleted Slog files from \usr\sap\SID\DVEBMGS<instance_nr>\log directroy and took restart now new Slog got created ... Now Sm21 also showing

no junk characters... i will monitor the same further.

I dont thinkg we need to delete contents from \usr\sap\SID\SYS\global as my problem seems to be resolved as per 2 notes.

Still i will monitor for another hour and keep you updates.

Thanks for your support..points rewarded.
