We are running the following versions of software:

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition 32-bit (SP0)

BRBACKUP 640 (40)

Oracle 9.2.0.5

We have gone through a number of Notes and found relatively litttle resolution to this problem. Has anyone been able to resolve this or have any suggetions, other than a DB or hardware upgrade, that might solve this issue.

Thanks and regards,

Andrew

Just to add:

Metalink 2391697.8 (Bug 2391697 - ORA-235 doing backup with RMAN in nocatalog mode) describes the problem, the fix is to upgrade to 9.2.0.7.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for digging this one up, I hadn't started looking on Metlink yet. This looks like a possible solution to our problem and I'll kick off an Oracle upgrade project as soon as possible. Once the upgrade is complete, I'll let you know if it has resolved the issue.

Thanks again.

Hi,

We opened an OSS message regarding this issue and SAP had the following response:

-

The errors are a result of Oracle bug 5137578: "ORA-235 AND RMAN-6010 DURING VALIDATE" base bug 2391697 from metalink as you have just mentioned. There have been other Customers experiencing this problem in 9.2.0.7.

Our Development opened bug (#5285032) for another customer, but this bug was closed because it was not feasible to fix the problem in Oracle 9.2.0.7. The bug is fixed in Oracle 10.2.0.2 and the changes are too large to open a new bug for 9.2.0.7.

The only current option is to upgrade to 10.2.0.2 to resolve this problem.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way around this other than upgrade to 10.2.0.2.

Andrew

did you update the RMAN catalog after adding that datafile?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

Kaushal, we are running on Oracle 9.2.0.5 and the Hotfix in Note 458932 is included in version 9.2.0.3.

Markus, we have not included updating of the RMAN catalog as part of our procedure when adding data files. I have read through Note 1113677 (Recovery catalog and backups with RMAN) and it mentions that the RMAN Catalog is not supported by BRTOOLS. Is there a reason for this? Should this step always be included when running an RMAN-based backup solution?

Also, our backup fails at various intervals, sometimes it fails after writing just one data file and other times it fails after writing 100 data files. It seems to be linked to the amount of activity on the database at the time of the failure, but we can only minimise this, not stop it durting the 12 hour backup window.

Thanks.

The note just says, that his steps is not automatically be done by brbackup but you can do it "manually".

Also, our backup fails at various intervals, sometimes it fails after writing just one data file and other times it fails after writing 100 data files. It seems to be linked to the amount of activity on the database at the time of the failure, but we can only minimise this, not stop it durting the 12 hour backup window.

Intermittent failures are very difficult to trace, especially on a public forum. I´d open an OSS call and let the support people look on the system.

Apart from that, I HIGHLY suggest upgrading to a more current Oracle release, the least supported one for which fixes will be provided, is 9.2.0.7. Keep in mind that standard maintenance for Oracle 9i is running out in about 7 weeks (end of July 2008 - see note 1021844 - Oracle 9.2 Extended Support free until July 31, 2008). If you don´t wanna pay a high amount of money for additional maintenance I´d upgrade to 10g.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your answer. We are about to start a 9 month migration project, so we will be upgrading before the end of the year. I was hoping to find a short term fix that we could apply in the interim.

Thanks and regards,
