CA Forum: Semantic Layer and Data Connectivity
Hi All,
1)Can we create universe(s) using multiple data bases? how about the connections?
2) Can we generate the reports with multiple data bases?
Please help me. Thanks in advance.
HI,
As for as my knowledge goes You can't create a universe from multiple databases in a single point of time.
but for reports u can create from multiple connections.
In deski
data manager -> add another connection -> create reports from both data providers.
for that also you should have a common dimension in both data providers otherwise you ll get in coorect results.
If helpful reward some points.

Hi,
You can use it in webi also.
You can only create universe with single database connection but you can create reports with multiple universes which are coming from different databases and connections.
For e.g.. You can create a webi report using two queries one coming from universe created from sql server and other created from oracle.
For that you have to create first query from one universe and than add another query in the same report with the different universe created from different database or connection in the edit query mode.
I hope this helps.

Gaurav
Hello Experts,
We have created two universes with two different data sources (1.Oracle; 2.Excel)
We used following table and sheet in our WebI report.
Oracle Table: Custjob
Custkey varchar2(20)
Job Varchar2(20)
-
Excel : Sheet1
Custkey text
Address text
-
Is it possible to create a Vertical Table with Custjob.Custkey, Custjob.Job and Sheet1.Address by joining Custjob.Custkey and Sheet1.Custkey ?
We tried creating a WebI report as mentiond above, we couldn't
However We are able to create two Vertical Tables. One with Custjob.Custkey & Custjob.Job and the other with Sheet1.Custkey & Sheet.Address
Could you please let us know, why we are unable to create single Vertical Table using fields from two different queires wich uses two different data sources?
Is there any way to achieve the same?
Thanks & Regards,,
Sundar
Hi,
To confirm what have been said in the different threads:
- Business Views are only available for Crystal Reports
- Universes are available for Web Intelligence, Crystal Reports, Live Office, Query as a Web Service (XCelsius), Polestar.
You can create multi-sources by using Data Federator and create a universe on top of a Data Federator driver.
Last to mix multiple sources in Web Intelligence you need to sychronize the different data providers (queries) in the document.
For instance, in your case you need to link Custjob.Custkey and Sheet1.Custkey together.

could you, please, specify how to use "business view" into Univerese Desiner and have access to databases on the different servers?

start with the product "Business View Manager" from business objects,, you will get it installed with the businss objects server side products, and have some look at this books from business objects
http://support.businessobjects.com/documentation/product_guides/default.asp
good luck
The "Business View" and the "Universe" are different semantic layer products offered by BusinessObjects an SAP Company.
Historically, the "Business View" comes from Crystal Reports, and the "Universe" comes from Web/Desktop Intelligence.
Crystal Reports can report off of Business Views and Universes.
Web/Desktop Intelligence can report off of Universes and not Business Views.
You'd not be combining Business Views and Universes.
An Universe is restricted to one connection at a time - this is by design.
If what you wish to have is to change a data connection depending on the Enterprise User, you can accomplish this by defining Access Restrictions in the Universe Designer, by specifying a different Connection and associating the restriction to an Enterprise User or User Group.
If what you wish to do is connect to multiple data sources at one time via a Universe, I'd recommend investigating the Data Federation/Integration products:

For sure you can do this,
you can use "business views" to create a universe using more than one database connection and here you can use this universe and create ur reports.
other way you can create a multiple query reports using the WebI, every Report Come from different universe and every universe has its own database connection
good luck
