HI,

refer below weblog:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_data_interchange

/people/nithiyanandam.au2/blog/2008/02/20/handling-edi-interfaces-using-seeburger-bic-modules

Brief about EDI:

There are four major sets of EDI standards:

The UN-recommended UN/EDIFACT is the only international standard and is predominant outside of North America.

The US standard ANSI ASC X12 (X12) is predominant in North America.

The TRADACOMS standard developed by the ANA (Article Numbering Association) is predominant in the UK retail industry.

The ODETTE standard used within the European automotive industry

refer this for more information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Data_Interchange

Refer the below link if u wanted to learn EDI messages:

http://www.edifactory.de/

Seeburger adapter is used for EDI implementation:

Seeburger adapters like OFTPS,AS2,X400 are used for B2B scenario where the file is coming through WAn network or mailbox. As XI dont have capability to convert the EDIFACT format file to XML the same work will be done by seeburger adapters.

The SEEBURGER Business Integration Converter (BIC) is an any-to-any format converter, used to translate EDI data and legacy data formats into XML and vice versa. It can also be used for complex, high performance XML-to-XML mappings or to interface to existing JDBC data sources.

Supported EDI formats include:

• ANSI

• EDIFACT

• INHOUSE

• IDOC

• XML Schema

• XML DTD

• CSV

• Delimited Data

• positional data

• SWIFT

• EANCOM

and many more.

See for converting the EDI XML to EDI and XML-EDI you need to have a seeburger mapping program at the adapter module which does the conversion. For this module you need a BIC tool of seeburger which provides the different module program for EDI to XML and XML-EDI. This program needs to be deployed on XI and through adapter it has to be called for conversion.

Seeburger has different adapters:

1) AS2

2) OFTP

3) X400

4) VAN

Hi Naresh,

Brief on EDI Interfaces.

EDI means Electronic Data Interchange. Normally for purcahsing process needs different documets.

1.Purchase Order.

2.Purchase Orderchange.

3.Qutaion.

4.Invoice

Instead of using paper work for this process use Electronic message using EDI interfaces. Its standerd format supported by all companies to exchange data.

suppose Purchase Order is called as 850 in EDI. It is representation of PO Contains Header,Data,Summary fields.

The format of it should be like

ISA00 00 08925485US00 08732365VC

GSPO925485US00732365VC200803111215850000142X005010ST8500001BEG00SA090207798820080311~CURBYUSD~REFDP00087~REFMR0007~REFPDINSTCKWK09~REFIA732365870~FOBPPORDSD XX

Here * is delimiter for each value. ISA,GS are different segment.

The segments vary from different documents.

An inter-company, application-to-application communication of data in standard format for business transactions, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a set of standards for structuring information that is to be electronically exchanged between and within businesses, organizations, government entities and other groups. Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) can be formally defined as 'The transfer of structured data, by agreed message standards, from one computer system to another without human intervention'

Despite being relatively unheralded, in this era of technologies such as XML web services, the Internet and the World Wide Web, EDI is still the data format used by the vast majority of electronic commerce transactions in the world.

The EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) standards were designed to be independent of communication and software technologies. EDI can be transmitted using any methodology agreed to by the sender and recipient. This includes a variety of technologies, including modem (asynchronous, and bisynchronous), FTP, Email, HTTP, AS1, AS2, etc

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a way to electronically exchange business documents, such as purchase orders and invoices, between companies.

Electronic Data Interchange is the computer-to-computer exchange of routine business data between trading partners in standard data formats. This definition contains 3 key concepts about EDI:

1)Computer-to-computer: EDI in its most efficient form flows directly out of a senderu2019s computer system directly into a receiveru2019s computer system without any human intervention; however, it is not always possible for EDI to flow in this most efficient manner.

2)Routing business data: EDI is used for routine business documents like Purchase Orders and Invoices. It is not used for non-routine business documents like complicated contracts or information meant for humans to read and analyze.

3)Standard data formats: A standard definition of the location and structure of the data is provided. Unstructured text is not EDI.

Process of EDI

*****************

1) A buyer completes an electronic purchase order form (PO).

2) The buyer sends the purchase order electronically to the vendor.

3) The purchase order is now on the network and awaits retrieval from the vendor.

4) Once the purchase order is retrieved, the vendor's computer generates an Acknowledgment that the PO was received.

5)The Acknowledgment is now on the network and awaits retrieval from the buyer.

6)The vendor has the PO and the buyer has acknowledgment that it was received.

Hi,

the easy way to learn EDI is through project only. If in ur organization if u have B2B projects which involved Seeburger adapters then u can learn very fast.

For example refer below weblog:

/people/nithiyanandam.au2/blog/2008/02/20/handling-edi-interfaces-using-seeburger-bic-modules

Hi,

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a set of standards for structuring information that is to be electronically exchanged between and within businesses, organizations.

EDI is used to send a messages, it is one of the way to send messages.

Mainly we are using two versions of EDIs.

ANSI X12 : The US people generally using this one.

EDI FACT : The Europian countries using this one.

EDI is a 3 digits number....The real time used documents are;

850 - Purchase Order

856 - ASN Advanced shipment notice or delivery

810 - Invoice.

855 - Pruchase order acknowledgement

997 - Functional Acknowledgement

860 - PO Change

864 - Text message.
