SAP Kernel release - Difference between SM51 and System-> Status ?

Former Member

Dear SDN colleagues,

I am a ABAP developer, and have been told by our Basis department that our SAP Kernel is 640.

When I check the following, I get different values:

1) System -> Status : SAP_BASIS is 620

2) Transaction SM51 -> Release Notes: I see SAP R/3 Kernel 640_REL

Can anyone explain why there is a difference in these informations? (and which is the correct one !)

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Jodie

Obviously it can be applied if the component is matching

Hi Ravindran,

The OSS note eg. OSS Note 612415, applicable for SAP_BASIS 620 can be applied if it matches my system component SAP_BASIS release 620.

The note says nothing about the SAP Kernel applicability, which is why it is not understandable why our SAP Basis has said the note is not applicable because of our SAP Kernel being 640 !

Hello Jodie,

First of all there is nothing to be "implemented" as per the note.

Additionally the poor basis guy is saying the correct thing. Check this part:

Solution

The changes are activated with the following patch levels:

4.6D : 1495

6.20 : 764

The paging administration was enhanced.

The error is no longer passed on to other sessions and the trace outputs to determine the error cause have been improved.

The patch levels mentioned are kernel patch levels and have nothing to do with your SAP_BASIS release.Since your kernel is 640 this note is no longer applicable. In my opinion you need to dig for some other note.

Hello . You have Downward-compatible kernel 640 for SAP_BASIS release 620.

Read for example Note 664679 - Installing 6.40 kernel in SAP WEB AS 6.10/6.20

620 basis component is compatible for 640 kernel and 640 basis component is compatible for 700 kernel as well

Same as 46C basis component is compatible for 46D kernel.

Hope this clears

Kernel is the executable which runs your sap instance whereas basis component is the collection of programs holding all other sap components. All other sap components shud be compatible for SAP_BASIS and SAP_ABA component which will be same always

Kernel version is 640 as stated in SM51 and the SAP_BASIS "component version" is 620.

Hello Juan,

Thanks for the reply. So you are saying that in the case I described above:

- SAP_BASIS release is 620

- SAP Kernel release is 640

Then, in terms of applying an OSS note which is states that applicability is for:

SAP_BASIS From release 620 To release 620

then this note would be relevant for my system, right?

For example OSS Note Note 612415 - Dumps: CONNE_ILLEGAL_TRANSPORT_HEADER, MEMORY_PGFREE_FAILED

Our Basis told me that the note is not relevant because we have Kernel 6.40, but the OSS note is saying it is relevant for SAP_BASIS 620?

Thanks in advance,

Best regards,

Jodie
