There is no difference except that when you perform Synchronous all changes occur in dialog mode and you get realtime update on what is happening to your import.
Synchronous has one disadvantage, suppose if you are performing the import and the network connection/sapgui crashes, your transport request is in an unpredictable state.
However, Asynchronous does not have that problem as the import happens in background.
