Hi Anil,

Galaxy

What it is:

Galaxy is the code name for new BPM development happening within SAP. Galaxy is SAP's long-term approach for business process modeling and runtime targeting human-centric, system-centric, and ad-hoc workflows. If you attended TechEd 2007, there was a demo in the key note, SDN clubhouse sessions on the topic, as well as session EPI103. You will see more information, including FAQ's, in a few more weeks.

Major Advantages:

Galaxy will provide a standards-based model-to-code solution based on BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) in Eclipse.

It will include capabilities for human-centric and system-centric processes.

It will include a business rules engine.

Implementation Considerations:

It is a new tool, still in development. Ramp up is planned for the second half of 2008.

It will be delivered with SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment.

Example business scenarios:

Processes where there is a white-space; a place where you want to extend or enhance the SAP process.

Processes that include both SAP and non-SAP service calls.

More specific examples will be provided later this year.

Where to get more information:

Since Galaxy is so new, we must wait a few more weeks for more specific information. However, Galaxy is based on the standard BPMN. So, learning BPMN is a good place to start.

Dr. Bruce Silver has written a fantastic 6-series articles on BPMN. He has also created a series of tutorials - how great is that!!!!

Both the articles series and the eLearning can be found here.

Future direction:

Reward points if this helps

Pragathi.

At Sapphire/ASUG look for official annoucements with an official name, ramp-up information, and more details. Also, keep on the lookout for articles and FAQ's coming on SDN.

BPM comes into picture in all other multi mapping scenarios.

only 1:n multi-mapping scenario can be done without BPM.

If multiple sender is there you have to use BPM for sure.

Also in case of synchronous- asynchronous scenarios you have to use BPM.

Galaxy would come with a New Rules Engine ( This would be an integrated Rule engine using YASU ( SAP has acquired this rules engine, completely on the JAVA stack) )

Another point would be that Galaxy would mainly be on the JAVA stack, and would not leverage the ABAP stack

Performance would be better.

In would be used heavily in the composition environment.

Hope this will help you.

Hi,

The Galaxy project, a standards-based model-to-code solution based on BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) will be based on Eclipse, the open source development environment.

For BPm.......

Hi Anil,

Galaxy has a long term roadmap to become a process abstraction layer for SAP u2013 you change the process model and the deployed system changesu2026cool

Initially the focus is "Edge" type Composition for processes outside the core SAP processes, the core maybe exposed later

BPMN as a model language u2013 so that both business and IT can understand

Tool uses Eclipse so that developers and BPX, work together on the same model u2013 no throwing the model over the wall

CAF Guided Procedures will be replaced u2013 but can be used today u2013 Galaxy is still some way off (12 u2013 18 months)

ccBPM will be replaced eventually once the process engine has been proved, but investment in BPEL models will be protected

The tool is about modelling and operation of processes. There is still a space for Enterprise modelling tools which model conceptual processes / optimise processes and include other perspectives.

Usage of the new rules engine (Yasu) will be key to reducing complexity

Many lessons have been learned from tools like CAF and ccBPM, easy usage is key
