As of SPS11, the Message Area has a different design that might be more to your users' liking. Icons are show that tell the different types of message. Here are the details

[http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/d8/2a934259a5cb6ae10000000a155106/frameset.htm|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/d8/2a934259a5cb6ae10000000a155106/frameset.htm]

The Message Area component isn't necessarily customizable to the extent that you describe. You would have to modify the component (not really suggested). If the new message area doesn't meet your need, then you might have to try and just create your own message output UI elements (assuming this is your own component) to get that level of control.

Hi Thomas,

Changeing colour might be issue, however the word MESSAGE should be replacable?? It must be somewhere stored as OTR or Text element.

Yes I am sure that it is a translatable text in some format - either OTR or more likely a text object within the assistance class. It would still be a modification, however, to even adjust the text. Consider the long term cost of making such a modification against the benefits that it would provide.
