Why, because this way web based applications can be developed which can be used in portal for example. Since more and more is moving towards web based applications, SAP sees this as the new standard way of creating web based user interfaces. It is platform independant, can be used on more clients, and coding is reduced (more modelling) which in turn will assure beter maintenance.

Also reusing WD components is a major advantage, again less development, less maintenance etc.

It is kind of difficult to explain in such short time, so better have a look at SDN section about WD4A.
