What is difference between Role and Profile?
in short just understand
a role is containing one or more tcodes with the authorization over tcodes
and a profile can contain one role or more than one role

Authorizations are assigned using authorisation-profiles in the form of roles, which are entered into the user master record.
A Role - also named group of activities - is a merge of authorisation grouped in authorisation objects. You can create a role in transaction PFCG. Roles are group of authorisation.
In old sap release there were no Role concept. Authorizations were assigned through authorisation-profiles in transaction SU02(group of authorisation).
Since SAP R/3 4.6 is possible a role-based authorization concept.
A Role as a profile name, that is not the same concept of authorisation-profile.
Each role must be generated - the generation of the roles give a profile name to the role, which can be automatisch from SAP defined (T-xxxx profiles) or can you self insert.
