Hello,
We are planning to delete unused roles in our SAP systems. But before deletion we would like to back these up so as to avoid any disruptions. Any suggestions on how to achieve this? (we have about 3,000 roles for deletion).
Thanks & regards,
Vijaya

Hi Vijaya,
thats quite easy....
Create a transport of the roles you want to delete first. (Mass transport of roles). Keep the transport file as backup. You can reimport the roles then if required....
Another way is to download those roles to your local PC and save them there (To download there is a menu-function in PFCG...). The advantage of this way is, that you can recover afterwords each single role you need one by one (the transport would reimport all those roles which are in the transport...).

Unfortunately the upload functionality also picks up the whole file. (or am I missing some very nice functionality here?) To extract just one role from a multi-role download requires editing the download file. Since the upload functionality only has very few consistency checks this is a dangerous path to follow.
If you need one role frome a multi-role file best import the whole file in a sandbox client and download the requested role to a new file for further use.

Thanks for the reply. But download would mean mass download and the subsequent upload is mass upload. How can we upload single roles from a mass download file?
Thanks,

If the roles are single roles and not the derived ones, then there should not be any problem in downloading and uploading them.
In case of derived roles,
To prevent inconsistent data, all roles from which this role is derived are also downloaded to the file.
When downloading composite roles, all the single roles contained in the composite roles are downloaded as well.
One more way to go with backing up these roles is by copying the roles to any other role name.
