Purchase order is raised when you want to procure a material from external source and a PO is raised against a vendor in ME21 with PO order type, date and the material and qty details.
In sales order, once it is raised, based on the req delivery date the system checks for backward scheduling and if not met will perform forward scheduling to check whether the schedule line can be confirmed or not (required del date can be met or not) In VOV6, you can define a schedule line category and assignment is made for a combination of MRP type and item category.
