Former Member

Hi Everyone,

I am new to SAP BASIS and needs to know certain things about SAP/USER drive.

1.What are kernels and why we need them?

2.What are trans and put files in USER/SAP Drive?

3.What are buffer, bin, cofiles, log and tmp folders in USER/SAP Drive?

I will be obliged if anyone can tell me for what these drives and folders used for or at least provide me the link where I can find this.

Helpful suggestions will surely be rewarded with points.

Regards,

Vicky

Actually, you are referring to

\usr\sap I believe.

1.What are kernels and why we need them?

ans. the kernel comprises the executables on the OS platform that provide the "Basis" for an sap system. Some of the files are disp+work.exe (windows), enq.exe, r3trans.exe, tp.exe, etc. But there are actually hundreds of files that make up the kernel. you will get to know them as you apply patches and research issues at service.sap.com/notes

2.What are trans and put files in USER/SAP Drive?

ans: The trans directory is used for the Change and Trasnport System (Transport Management System) txn STMS. here you find the objects required to manage the delivery of SAP system changes.

3.What are buffer, bin, cofiles, log and tmp folders in USER/SAP Drive?

buffer contains text files with the listing of transports. each file with the name of a corresponding SAP system will contain the contents of a transport queue.

bin contains the transport domain profile

cofiles contain command information about a transport. These files are modified as a transport is moved through a system landscape.
