Information on FTP

Hi All,

I need a clarification regarding FTP. Is FTP must for an MDM server. Can I get some documents for enabling FTP.

Hi Pramod,

FTP is a file transfer protocol for exchanging files over any TCP/IP based network to manipulate files on another computer on that network regardless of which operating systems are involved (if the computers permit FTP access).

There are many existing FTP client and server programs.

AS our MDM Server is not ABAP Stack, so it doesn't understand Proxies, RFC etc. It understands only the file format using MDM Import Manger we can take data and using MDM syndicator we can send data to different systems. so for that one must require to install the FTP Server on the MDM server machine and in FTP server we define the path upto the ready folder of the MDM Server.

Types of FTP:

BulletProof FTP Server -supporting all version of Windows, Cerberus FTP Server — Windows only

CesarFTP — freeware, Windows only

CrossFTP Server — open source, free software, Windows, CrushFTP Server — Professional shareware server supporting FileZilla Server — open source, free software, WinNT etc.

Hi Pramod,

In simple language FTP is used when used when you want to send an output file from MDM system to an External system.

An external system such as R/3 or BI etc cannot access your MDM sytem untill a connection is established among the two or a path is established from where one sytem can place and take a file.

This path is nothing but FTP .It is teh mechanism by which a system gives and receives dat file by making the path wheer the file is to placed ie ready folder as FTp enabled.

Hi pramod

MDM sends/receives data in file format only from destined paths which is READY folder for inbound/outbound port.FTP is File transfer protocol used for data transfer using TCP/IP. Assume the foll scenario:

MDM>XI>R/3 . data from R/3 comes in Idoc, received by XI which converts them to XML file and now the file has to placed in Ready folder. this can be achieved by making the folder FTP complaint.Other option is NFS which is in simple terms sharing the folders and using File servers(recommended when both servers are on same network.

How to do this:

The folders from where MDM has to pick data(import) or write files(syndication) has to be FTP compliant.

Hi Pramod,

FTP server is used with MDM to get data in to MDM or out from MDM to other systems.FTP server pings to a specified location and pics up the file and put it to the other specified location(at the time of syndication).

For example.

suppose you are sending data from MDM to R\3 using XI as a middleware then in XI sender communication channel you will use FTP , So that the FTP server will ping into the ready folder of the outbound port of the MDM repository and pick up the XML file.And at the reciver end in XI reciver channel will be IDOC type so that the data will be transfered to R\3 (as R\3 transferes data using IDOCS).
