Hi,
While creating a sales order item description column is missing.
User can enter item number but cannot see description.
How can this column (Description) be inserted at item level while creating a sales order?

It may not be visible in the screen, but check in the right hand side columns. Guess it is available there.

i presume the issue is happening because when u are creating the sales order, the screen which is being presented is the item overview tab. if u click on the sales tab, u can see the description of the material also.
This (Description) column is absent in sales ,item overview as well as item detail tab

you can use the transaction SHD0 to create the required screen variants for VA01 where you can specify which fields should be active or not.
