We had two times the problem that our XI could not reach our mail server to deliver a mail. After a manual restart of the item everything in XI seems to be OK but the mail did not reach the recipient. So the mail was obviously not sent.
My question: Where in XI can I find these mails. Which TA can help to administrate the outgoing mail?

I think you can also set the "generate delivery report" in the adapter settings to create a delivery report for each message ...
You can also set the mail adapter to debug mode in order to track this down, but it is not recommended in production or when a lot of messages are processed by the adapter (performance, size etc) ... Moreover, intermittent failures are difficult to trace
You can also monitor messages using the XI Message Display Tool available at http://<xihost>:<xiport>/MessagingSystem/monitor/monitor.jsp

Are you talking about internet mail?
If yes then check in SAP Connect administration intransaction "SCOT" whether SMTP Connection data is correctly maintained.
Also check whether job is sheduled by choosing View --> Jobs.
If these info is not maintained then you have to maintain it.
