what is the functionality of item category & scheduling category.....

Simply i can say that......Item category will define that wheather that material is relevant for delivery and billing or not. Scheduling cat. controles the delivery dates and qty's.

The item category controls what the item does in the sales doc & in any later processing for that business transaction. It controls the sales doc & affects the schedule line category.
The system uses an item category to process a material differently in each sales doc type: in inquiry, the standard item is priced but not relevant for delivery. For the free of charge item, no pricing & no delivery. But in sales order both the items are relevant for delivery and pricing is carried out for the standard item.
scheduling category
A classification that distinguishes between different kinds of schedule line. The category determines how the system processes the schedule line.
Use
The schedule line category determines, for example, whether the system passes on requirements to materials requirements planning (MRP).

ITEM CATEGORY
Item categories are defined to provide additional control functions for the sales documents and thus meet the demands resulting from different business transactions. A separate control is defined for each of these item categories. For example, the functions of a standard item are completely different from those of a free-of-charge item or a text item.
SCHEDULE LINE
The items in a sales document are divided into one or more schedule lines. These schedule lines differ from each other with respect to date and quantity.
Different control elements are also defined for the schedule lines. For example, for some schedule lines, material requirements planning is not carried out; for other schedule lines, it is carried out. Also goods receipt, not goods issue, is posted for a schedule line defined in a returns document.

THe Item category controls - How the Item Should behave in a sales document.
eg., The same material should behave differently in different documents (IN,QT,OR)
The same material should behave differently in the same sales document ( Normal Items and Free of charge Items using different item categories - TAN and TANN)
The Schedule line category specifies whether the item is relevant for delivery or not, the movement type is assigned, Availability check and TOR can be activated.

the functionality of item category is the features that should be carried at item level of that item category type...
schedule line determines the delivery date, availability check etc of the item.
item category is determined by doc tye+ it.cat.group
sch.line is determined by
it.cat+Mrp type...
