What is the difference between item catagory & Item category group.

Hi,

Item category group is one of the determining factors for Item category.

item category controls Princing, billing, schedule lines and many more (look into VOV7 for details)

Item category group is grouping of item categories based on certain criteria.

Item category

Itemcategory is defines the characteristics of a document item.

For example, the item category controls the type and scope of:

Pricing

Billing

Delivery

Inventory posting

Transfer of requirements

Items in stock, and value and text items are item categories.

Transaction VOV7

Examples:-

TAN--standard item

TANN-- Free item

Item category group

Itemcategory group specified in the material master record.

The system uses the item category group and the sales document type to determine the category of a document item. For example, in the SAP standard version the item category group NORM is defined for all materials kept in stock.

Sales document type+Itemcategory group--->Item category

Transaction VOV4

Examples:-

BANS-->Third party Materil Itemcategory group

VERP-->Packing material itemcategory group

NLAG-->Non stock material Itemcategroy group

Hi,

An item category controls the behaviour of a item.(std, Text etc.)

It is determined by the (sales/Delivery) document type and item category group.

In item category group (of material), you group together different material types for item category determination.

Eg:- Item category determination.

Item cat. = Sales doc. type + Item cat. gr.

TAN = OR + NORM

Item category Group is nothing but Nature of the Product which means whether it is Service item or Standard item, which is mentioned in Materail master data ex NORM, DIEN, ERLA... etc.

Item category is nothing but whether that particulat material is relevent for delivery and billing or not ex: TAN and TANN, TAS ect.

Dear Rashmi,

Depend upon your Item category group u selected in Material Master & Sales Document type your Item category got selected. i.e

Sales Document Type + Item Category Group + Usage + Hight level Item Category = Item Category

1) Item Category Groups

The item category group determines how a material is processed in the sales order. It defines, for example, that pricing does not take place for a free of charge item, such as a business gift; or that inventory management is not carried out for a service. When processing sales and distribution documents, the system uses the item category group to determine the item category. The system determines the item category based on the item category group of the material and the current business transaction, and proposes it in the respective document.

When creating the material types non-stock material and services, DIEN is proposed in both cases for the item category group, because the order processing for both material types is identical: for example, pricing is carried out for both, but no availability check.

2) Item Category

When you create a sales document, the system determines the item category for an item according to settings in the item category determination table for the sales document type, item category group, item usage, and higher level item.

Item categories contain instructions about the attributes of the line item to which they are assigned. Review the standard sales document item categories for product selection. If you decide that these do not meet your business requirements, for example if you require that pricing be done at the sub-item level rather than the main item level, create new sales document item categories.

Item Category: VOV7 - to control the behaviour of the Material in particular document/transaction.

Where as Item cat group: is used to determine the item cat in combination with Sales doc type+item cat group + usage + heigher level item cat"-

this is used to link the material while item cat determination.

Just like Customer pricing procedure/Doc pricing procedure in pricing proc determination.
