Oracle Patch Update April 2008

Dear all,

We are running on ECC 5.0 HP-UX platform Oracle 9.2.0.7 version and we have received an alert from Oracle metalink to apply Critical Patch Update April 2008 .

As per platform matrix on Metalink site 9.2.0.8 is minimum version , please advice if we need to take care of the same as per SAP point of view or we can ignore the same or not consider it as mandatory patch.

Best Regards,

AR

CPU patches from Oracle need to be treated differently, SAP recommends installing them only if it's absolutely unavoidable.

E. g. check note 1140644 - CPU patches January 2008 (Oracle Critical Update Program):

<...>

For Oracle 9.2.0.7, note the following:

Unfortunately, the CPU patches for Oracle 9.2.0.7 conflict with patches that have already been installed and that are important for an SAP system. Therefore, there will be no further release of the patches for Oracle 9.2.0.7. We therefore recommend that you upgrade the database to Oracle 9.2.0.8 and use the CPU patches for Oracle 9.2.0.8 instead.

<...>

and

<...>

We recommend that ALL SAP customers import the CPU patch only if it is absolutely necessary.

Risks:

The main risk when you install the CPU is that, as soon as SAP provides a new patch, this patch could clash with the CPU (it may not clash). If a clash occurs, you must decide between the CPU and the new patch.

<...>

Especially on *nix platforms, where patches need to be re-linked to produce the executables/libraries, you may have conflicts with already installed patches. In that case you'd need to open a call @ SAP (or Oracle) and let them create a merge patch - which may then conflict with a new SAP recommended patch... (and the story goes on).

From SAP point of view, you can check the PAM.,

PAM : HP-UX 11.23/PA-RISC

At least Oracle Patchset 9.2.0.2 required. For WEB AS 6.40 based components at least Patchset 9.2.0.4 required. See OSS note 540021.

Oracle Enterprise Edition only

Please see SAP note 925871 for Oracle 9.2 maintenance information

PAM HP-UX 11.23/IA64 64BIT

At least Oracle Patchset 9.2.0.2 required. For WEB AS 6.40 based components at least Patchset 9.2.0.4 required. See OSS note 540021.

Oracle Enterprise Edition only

See note 623418 for information about restrictions and updates about component availability

Please see SAP note 925871 for Oracle 9.2 maintenance information

Its better to apply patch to 9.2.0.8

Shaji,

Could you please elaborate a bit , because there are less chances for us to upgrade to 9.2.0.8 at least for coming 2 months... so please tell me whether we can or cannot go for this patch until and unless we are on 9.2.0.8..???

Not necessarily you have to patch, unless you have some Oracle issues. You already meet the minimum requirement as per PAM.
