Portal and DI - Backup restore

Hello,

I came across several blogs/forums for Backing up Portal(java) environment and then restoring it back.

It says, backup the file systems (../j2ee and ../SDM, /usr/sap and /sapmnt and also /etc). We backed up the above and also the database (offline).

Environment:

EP/DI : On HP UX (we are going to apply Stack15 and that is why we want to practise backup restore in case system crashes)

Oracle: AIX

My questions are

1. once we backup and when system crashes, all we do to regain it back is, restore the above filesystems including the database and we will get the system back up and healthy?

2. Will the above backup take care of DI (Dev infrastructure) as well?

3. Forums also say, restore the filesystem, restore the database and restore the SDM... if we are backing up everything under "/usr/sap.." does SDM not come along with it? Why there is separate step for SDM restore?

4. Are there any special links or files that needs to be copied too for NWDI or no?

Thanks. We are waiting for the above answer before we can proceed with the stacks.

thanks

WR

Basically, you want to have an offline (cold) backup of the DB and a filesystem backup taken at the time the DB is offline. That way you have a true 'snapshot'. /usr/sap would certainly include SDM.

If you do ongoing online DB backups, you should still take filesystem backups that correspond to those online DB backups, as well.

Thanks david,
